FAQ
I'm a complete beginner, can I join?
Yes, anyone can join. The club has members of all abilities, from complete beginners up to experts. There are trips to cater for everyone.
I don't go to Sydney University, can I join?
Yes. Students and non-students can join alike, the only difference is the price. The club membership is standard at $40, while the SUSF membership is $10 for students, and $60 for community (non-student) members. You need to be part of SUSF to join SURMC.
What equipment do I need?
If you're just getting in to climbing the most useful pieces of equipment to invest in are climbing shoes and a harness. Some chalk or a chalk bag (for friction) and a helmet (if you've got brains) aren't bad ideas either. You can hire all of these at indoor climbing gyms. The club has harnesses and helmets for members to use (but not shoes) for outdoor trips. Also one of the simplicities of indoor bouldering is that all you need are a pair of climbing shoes.
Do I pay for each trip?
Club trips are generally free. Some trips and training do have a cost associated with them. For example staying in accommodation or participating in skills courses organised by the club will usually be paid in part by the club and in part by participants. These are the minority of trips.
How often do you go on trips?
We meet each Wednesday night at The Ledge from 6pm onwards. There are generally more outdoor club trips run during Uni semester. Have a look at our Facebook group.
What's the best way to improve?
We're not experts, but getting out there for a climb regularly, putting in the extra effort, thinking positively and clearly, learning movement techniques, being in tune with your body, taking rests when you need, and working out the sequence/flow of a climbing route are some good general rules of thumb. Also, talk to people! It's very rare that climbers are unwilling to help each other out when you're trying to complete a route. Drawing upon other climbers' experience is a great way learn about the sport.
