Self rescue and climbing anchors course
Trips| September 11, 2010 | to | September 12, 2010 |
The club is organising another self rescue and climbing anchors course for second semster. The purpose of the course is to build up the skills base within the club so that as the more experienced members move on there will be others with the ability to step in and help out with running trips and events. Mic Rofe, an experienced guide, will be the teacher and the topics covered will include anchor building, gear placement (as in traditional climbing) and basic self rescue techniques. The course will run for two days over the weekend of the 11th and 12th of September in the Blue Mountains and is all practical and hands on with some breaks for climbing too. Numbers will ideally be 6-7 people but if there is more interest then another course could be organised before too long. If you’re at all interested then I can definitely recommend the course as it’s always a lot of fun besides learning lots of useful skills. Register below to express interest.

Wow…looks like a cuddly trip :p
August 25th, 2010 at 2:43 pm
For those interested, the club has a pretty good library of climbing related books. There are a couple of must read books in there for trad/rope skills etc. Might be an idea to read one before/after this course.
August 26th, 2010 at 8:41 am
James, what are the names of the ‘must reads’?
August 26th, 2010 at 8:54 am
Who posted this? Lol I was not consulted about the use of me in an image! :-p
August 26th, 2010 at 9:08 am
I would strongly suggest ‘Climbing Anchors’ – it’s fab!
August 26th, 2010 at 10:26 am
This website is really good to have a flick through:
http://www.psychovertical.com/
Click on technique and then rack and hardware

I’m hopeless with any kind of name, I just don’t seem to pay much attention to them so I can’t say. As Fi says I think Climbing Anchors is the one I’m thinking of most, but just get a keyholder to take you in and have a flick through some of them, there are on the top shelf of the left hand cupboard. Sign them out like other gear.

Hello,
Will I be able to just come up on the Sunday? The horse races are on the Saturday and my course is organising it, so I should probably go along.
Let me know
August 31st, 2010 at 7:15 pm
Hi Clea, I’d say you really should go for both days since the activities on the Sunday will be following on from Saturday. If you really can’t make it on the Saturday I’d have to suggest that you look out for the next time the course is run (probably 1st semester next year or late this year if there really is a lot of interest)
I realise that probably not everyone who is interested will be able to make it on those dates and I appologise for the late notice. Unfortunately having to organise dates in Mic’s schedule means that we don’t have a lot of flexibility.
August 31st, 2010 at 9:56 pm
To everyone who has shown interest in this; it seems now that, provided everyone is free to attend on that weekend, there is more interested people than can be accomodated on the course. The numbers are limited because the course is all practical and Mic needs to demonstrate and supervise all of the activities.
If you’ve registered interest and can make it on the 11th and 12th (both days will be in the Blue Mountains) then could you either come and talk to me at the Ledge tomorrow (if you don’t know me just ask at the desk) or post here to confirm your interest.
The rationale for the club running the course is that we need to build the experience base of the club so that there are sufficient people who have the knowledge to possibly help out with running events etc. So we’re happy to cover the cost from the clubs budget but if there needs to be a choice about who gets to go, given the limited spaces, that is what I’ll be considering.
Hope to talk to you all soon.

Hey Guys
Look I wouldn’t mined going over rescues and the like. But I don’t think I should take the place of others on the trip because I have done it all before. But does any one want to make a day to review all the rescues and practice them to death? I usually try to go through them once a year.
September 1st, 2010 at 4:14 pm
Chris, you probably know as much as any of us. If you organise something I’m sure you’ll get people to turn up.
September 1st, 2010 at 6:02 pm
I can make both days
September 1st, 2010 at 11:26 pm
If there ends up being space Im well keen to learn some more! I can make both days.
September 2nd, 2010 at 2:25 pm
Im keen to go if theres space and i can make both days.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:51 pm
Just as a heads up for people going on this course. As the club will be paying for part of this course you will be expected to help run a club trip somewhere through out the next year. Can be a beginners trip, bouldering, hardcore aid trip, or what ever.

You guys might also be interested in taking a quick look at the safety page of the website http://www.surmc.org.au/safety/

Hi all, I’ve come up with an attendance list for the course, which I had to keep to 6 at the request of Mic Rofe. So if you’re keen but don’t get to go I apologise. The course should be run again in future and if you’re a regular face between now and the next one, you should get the chance then. The next one will most likely be in first semester next year.
Anyway, the list is:
Emma Welshman
Sam Doss
Daniel Roberts-Clarke
Aaron
Aisling
Joon
Those on the list will need to organise transport amongst themselves and gear. If possible the gear should be sorted out next Wednesday as you will need to take a bunch of group gear (racks, ropes, screwgates etc.) as well as personal gear plus prussik loops.
In the past, people have opted to camp at Mt York on the Saturday, which is free (you can even camp in the shed without a tent) but you can make other arrangements.

Hi guys,
Since Kate has so thoughtfully nominated me as organising bitch, here goes with the organising.
1. How many people have cars and are willing to drive people?
2. Who needs gear and can’t get to the Ledge this week?
I’m happy to organise the group gear but unless you contact me I’m going to assume you have your own personal gear. My phone number is 0423 147 788, or post a message here.
Are there campfires allowed at Mt York or will we have to bring stoves?
September 4th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
I can drive but I’m in Blacktown, anyone who can get close-ish is welcome to a lift
September 4th, 2010 at 2:20 pm
Camp fires are allowed in most (if not all) campsites in the Bluies, provided there isn’t a fire ban on the day (which you can look up at http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/NationalParks/FireClosure.aspx under the Blue Mountains National Park drop down list).
I suggest you bring a stove anyway though… much easier to cook with (and less soot to clean afterwards…).
September 4th, 2010 at 5:27 pm
Dear Emma,
I’m fairly vauge when it comes to climbing gear. Though I can take some stuff with me. I have a car, live about the northern side of Sydney. I’ll most likely see you Wednesday, where we can discuss.
September 5th, 2010 at 8:19 am
I’ll probs drive, but from Camden, so that’s no help to anyone else unless anyone needs a lift from around Penrith area?
Shall we make a meeting time and place for Sat am, where the different car loads can congregate and follow each other to wherever we end up doing the course, organiser Emma?
Also Michael is there always room in this shed you mentioned at the campground? Just trying to decide whether to be lazy and just bring a swag not tent..
ps. Emma I have personal gear and may or may not make it to the ledge on Wed depending on class finishing time, so might not see you guys to help organise anything before Sat
September 5th, 2010 at 10:06 am
I live in the northern suburbs (epping etc). Could i hitch a ride with you sam?
September 5th, 2010 at 11:08 am
I am glad that you guys have been able to set aside a couple of days to
broaden your climbing skills and have some fun in the Blueies.
Specifically I would love to have a look at four areas:
1. Top-rope anchor set-ups
2. Self Rescue
3. Improvised Rope Rescue
4. Abseiling (ie getting off or down to climbs)
But let me know if there are things that you would like to go over – it is
your weekend!
Preparation:
It would be nice if you can tie figure-of-eights, clove hitches, prussicks &
french prussicks. An alpine butterfly if you want to top the class.
Visit Pete or Phil at the Ledge between lectures for a quick refresher.
Fisher Library around 796 has some great books for instruction and
inspiration…
Transport:
See if you can car pool, or we could organise a shuttle from Mt Victoria Train Station.
Meeting Point & Time:
Mt York car park Turning Circle,9am Sat 11 Sep.
Finish up around five each day.
Group Gear (can someone take responsibility for grabbing this stuff):
1x trad rack, draws, 2 or 3 climbing ropes, 2 or 3 static ropes (can be
short), a few short rigging ropes, many locking ‘biners
Rope protection; carpet off cuts, or purpose made
Personal Gear:
Helmet, harness, belay plate, 3 or 4 locking biners*, prussick loops*,
climbing shoes, dbl sling*
lunch, water, sunscreen, warm top, raincoat
*I will have spares of these items. And anything else if you let me know.
Accommodation:
Mt York (bring water), or Megalong Valley are both good for camping.
Weather:
Do not be put off by the weather in Sydney it is often a lot better up here
and there are many places we can go.
Contacting me:
Email or call or text anytime.
See you all next week,
Mic.

That was the email from Mic.
Sounds like we have plenty of cars to go around. I’m in Westmead so I might come with you Aaron, if that’s ok? And then Daniel can come with whoever is closest.
In terms of gear, does anyone usually drive to the Ledge on Wednesday, and would be happy to keep hold of the group gear until Saturday? Otherwise we can split it up amongst whoever is there.
How do people feel about Katoomba or Blackheath as a meeting point? If we’re going to be at Mount York by 9, we should probably meet at around 8:30.
Aisling you can share my tent if you want.
We should probably swap phone numbers sometime between now and Saturday.
September 5th, 2010 at 5:17 pm
Hey,
I live at Sydney uni main campus, so I’m happy to take the racks etc back to mine on wednesday. It looks like noone is around the city area, so I’m happy to catch a train and meet you all in katoomba on the Saturday morning.
I also have my own personal gear, and will probably camp. I have a stove/tent if anyone needs one
September 5th, 2010 at 5:58 pm
Hi guys, sounds like you’re pretty much sorted for transport. I’d recommend splitting the group gear between you on Wednesday because there will be quite a lot. If someone comes with a car then you could probably give it to them but I think it might be a bit much for Daniel on the train.
As for the hut, there should be space as it’s a decent size. BTW the hut I’m talking about is the hexagonal shaped hut with one side open that is downhill a bit from the camping areas, not the bus shelter style thing near the road.
September 6th, 2010 at 11:07 am
Yeah sure Emma I can give you a lift.
Mike I can take some of the group gear on Wednesday if needed.
September 6th, 2010 at 10:15 pm
No probs Joon, i’ll talk to you Wednesday? Otherwise my number is 0410121050.
September 6th, 2010 at 10:26 pm
I’m not certain of the duration or intesity of the course, but would anbody be keen to do some sport climbing while we are in the blueies? Given that we are not tierd and there is still day light.
September 6th, 2010 at 10:33 pm
aye cancel that we finnish at 5 each day, though sounds like we will be having some fun on the rock.
September 7th, 2010 at 11:37 am
Finish at 5 thats no excuse. Theres heaps of sport climbs on fat ring bolts you can do at mt york in the dark. Question is with or without a head torch????
September 7th, 2010 at 12:52 pm
hmmm….
September 7th, 2010 at 1:00 pm
Well yeah, I guess I can put them freshly learned self rescue tips into use
September 8th, 2010 at 12:09 pm
practising our skills by getting into an epic? I like.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:22 pm
If anybody ever goes to mt york and has an epic they deserve it.
Climbing in the dark is awesome, as long as your belayer is holding the rope whats the problem?????
ps just remember to clip the big shinny ring bolts….
September 9th, 2010 at 5:23 pm
Hey y’all, is anyone else planning on taking a swag or something and just sleeping in the shed? otherwise i’ll tent it too if noone else is, seems a bit antisocial / lonely otherwise.
ps. sam i’ll totally have a go at climbing after the course in the fading light if you’re still keen!
September 10th, 2010 at 10:58 am
Hey Emma, did Mike give you my number? if not it is 0415425704, give me a call to arrange transport for tomorrow
September 10th, 2010 at 12:21 pm
Hey! just looking at the train times etc.
I can be at blacktown at 6:58, 7:10, 7:52.
Or blackheath at 8: 34…
Whats easiest? I’m not too worried either way
Danny

Forgot to put my number up. It’s 0432339236

September 10th, 2010 at 12:51 pm
Daniel,
google says that it takes ~2hrs to get to mount York from blacktown, so if you get to blacktown at 7:10 that’ll work.
Get back to me
September 10th, 2010 at 1:02 pm
mmmh..how about a maybe Ash? Lets see how inspired and energetic we are after 5:-). Though the idea dusk climbing is starting to grow one me.
September 10th, 2010 at 2:25 pm
Hey Aaron, should I meet you on the carpark side of Blacktown station at 7:10?
September 10th, 2010 at 2:29 pm
Sure Emma that should work
September 10th, 2010 at 3:08 pm
Ok great sounds good! Yeah dusk climbing is sounding like an amazing plan
See you guys at 7:10 at Blacktown!
September 10th, 2010 at 3:15 pm
Does anyone know what the go with water at Mt York is? Is it worth someone getting a 10L container or something?
September 10th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
You have to bring water to Mt York but you can refill at the servo just down the road if needed. A big water container could be useful…
