Queens Birthday Weekend Climbing to Nowra

Trips
June 6, 2009toJune 8, 2009

Further to the conversation at the flodge earlier this evening it has been decided that the climbing trip will be heading to NOWRA-tomo’s point on sunday june 8 -monday june 9

One important thing to remember for this trip is that some people will be staying over on sunday night so it is imperative that you ensure you have a ride home for when you need to leave. The plan is meet at the ledge on sunday at 7.30ish (will be soo hungover) then drive to berry bakery, then onto Nowra. Once there we’ll camp at the ski park where it is possible to hire canoe’s to paddle across. Plan is to return monday arvo, its probably better to leave lunch time to attempt to beat the traffic, however this is most likely a lost cause :)

If you have any queries about anything post them up and im sure you will get a answer, ie how to get to Nowra ski park ect ect ect… It is possible to just do a day trip however it is a battle to drive home tired after a full days climbing, but its upto you :)

  1. Georgi Says:

Im very keen to get some climbing in this long weekend. My vote would be for Nowra (2.5hrs from Syd so ok for day trip) or the blue mountains for some trad climbing. I’m up for an over night trip too.

  2. James H Says:

If I worked out what the GeoHalf was earlier (or remembered Tim telling me about it some time ago) I would have been keen for that.

Staying with the adventure theme I vote Warrenbungles!

  3. Dave D Says:

I’m with James. Adventurous Trad sounds like a winner.
    So my vote is Warrenbungles
Though since I was the one who suggested it, I actually don’t know anything about it other than it exists.
It is probably not practicle for day trips. The bluies is the only place practicle for day trips though The bluies will be cold except for crags such as Bowens(hard), Mt york, New york,
so we could divide into two groups those who want to do day trips and those who want some adventure
I don’t have exams then so warrenbungles for me.

  4. Aline Says:

I am keen for climbing as well! haven’t been to the mentioned places. Nowra sounded nice from what I heard of. Up for O/N trips, too :o ) (would have to borrow a club tent so or some is up for sharing) :o )

  5. Aline Says:

no one mentioned that most of the the climbs at nowra start with grade 18 :o ( comfort zone is more around 16, but I’ll do my best no matter where we go! :o )

  6. Michael L Says:

Aline, that’s not quite true. The one time I’ve been to Nowra I remember there were a number of climbs at easier grades all in the same area. It’s a big area so there is some variety.

Anyway I won’t be here for the Queens birthday weekend but I may be climbing! It’ll just be at the Gunks in New York!

  7. Fiona Says:

I am with Georgi on Nowra or Bluies trad, but I can only do a day trip to give my brain a bit of a break. Ugh I hate exams…

  8. Kate Says:

No exams for me – so I can do overnight stuff. Aline – you can share my tent if you need, it’s big enough for 2! I do have a housewarming on the Sat, but I’m flexible as to whether I actually go or not…
As for what to climb, I don’t mind. Trad is fine, whether it be adventurous or not.

  9. Fiona Says:

1 space left (Arnaud is also coming)

  10. Kate Says:

Um, shouldn’t that comment be on Barrenjoey, Fiona?

  11. Fiona Says:

Whoops yes thanks Kate. Trying to post fast at work. Sorry guys!

  12. Jesse Gubb Says:

I’m up for some adventurous overnight climbing.

  13. Lachlan Boyd Says:

i don’t have exams ether so overnight or day trips are fine with me, looking forward to getting outside for a change.

  14. dave d Says:

Turns out I made a booboo with the dates. I have an exam the following tuesday so I will only be able to make a day trip. So don’t let me stop you guys if you can go wild and try something crazy different

  15. Aline Says:

    Kate, I am in :o )

  16. ET Says:

I can be flexible… but if the vote goes down to a wire, I prefer to try the Warrenbungles.

    So far we have:
    Nowra – 3
    Warrenbungles – 3
People registed but haven’t stated their preference – 4

  17. Tim Says:

errrr just like to mention that the ‘bungles r quite some distance away (like past dubbo) and are reallly quite big (climbs we done @ frenchmans = small fries). bring head torches!!

  18. Gavin Law Says:

If anyone else is up for it I’d really like to go and do Bunny Bucket Buttress but other than that I’m up for anything.

  19. James H Says:

Tim, we chickened out of the big ones at Frenchman’s so thats not saying quite as much. Those are positive points you mention btw. The current list contains a fairly high proportion of inexperienced people who I errm, how to put this nicely…don’t necessarily want to go adventure climbing with at this stage (for your safety and mine). But Tim if you and some others are keen them so am I :)

However, a Nowra trip would be easier to organise and give people the choice to stay for a few days or one day only.

  20. Lachlan Boyd Says:

Nowra sounds like a good plan. as long as we don’t get rained out.

  21. Georgi Says:

We don’t all have to do the same thing either if some ppl want to go to the warranbungles or BBB then that’s cool. As stated on an earlier post Id be up for some trad climbing @ Bluies or maybe a trip to Nowra.

Weather isn’t looking great at this stage…

  22. Kate Says:

Maybe we should try and sort out who wants to do what at the Ledge on Wed? Coz if we need gear, we’ll need to sort it out soon…
I’d actually prefer to do one day trip for the weekend (due to copious amounts of work piling up as I spend too much time climbing…) So we need to determine which people only want to do a day trip, what day is best for them, AND where to go, PLUS what people want to do overnighters, and where they will be going, etc etc. Otherwise we may start to run into issues with gear…

  23. Aline Says:

I would agree with Kate to sort things out on Wednesday. Since Mike correct me, I am still up for Nowra, but Bluey’s sound good as well!

  24. Fiona Says:

I’m flexible but suggest Sunday for a day trip (Monday if the crap weather continues) so then Kate has the option of going to her housewarming. Here is where we stand according to the posts:

day trip people: Kate, me, DD

flexible overnight/day people: Lachlan, Gavin, Eug, Aline, Georgi

    adventure people: Hendo, Tim, Jesse

    undeclared: Sean, Arnaud

So I think we have 3 camps: adventure people; non-adventure overnight people and non-adventure day trip people. It might ease the gear strain if the non-adventure day trippers and overnighters go to the same place. The weather may be determinative in any case… I hope not because I will go insane if it rains for another week!!

I’m up for Nowra or Bluies trad if the other day trippers/overnighters are and am planning to drive — Kate, a spot in my car is yours as always if you want it, same goes for DD and anyone else from the flexible camp who opts for a day trip only.

  25. Georgi Says:

Can I suggest we get together during climbing time on Wednesday not pub time as by this stage the ledge will be closed and we’ll have no access to the gear locker.

  26. Gavin Law Says:

I am pretty flexible but, as always, will be up for an adventure.

  27. Sean Clynes (Sexy hairless look) Says:

Don’t have any great preference but would prefer a single day so I can study/do music. Only need a lift and a helmet.

  28. wilfred Says:

im keen for a climb on the long wkend as well. Cant come to ledge tomorrow as the origin is on but all i need is a helmet. Nowra sounds good thou

  29. Mark & Brooke Says:

Hey, we’d prefer a day trip too, Monday is better, but Sunday works too. Will be at the Ledge on Wed., so happy to chat about it then.

  30. Fiona Says:

Day trip may need to be Saturday or Monday as BOM is predicting a chance of showers on Sunday and fine for Sat/Mon.

  31. Georgi Says:

    Saturday
    Mostly sunny
    Min: 9°C Max: 20°C

    Sunday
    Possible shower
    Min: 10°C Max: 19°C

    Monday
    Mostly sunny
    Min: 10°C Max: 19°C

  32. dave d Says:

Ok from my understanding of today.
The plan was to climb sunday with the possibility of some people sleeping the night and climbing monday. Both days being open for day trips.
The mountains seemed the likely destination with the possibility of barrenjoey as an alternative.
As a side note the weather is looking good for sat poor for sun and average for monday.

  33. Fiona Says:

We’re meeting at the ledge at 7 on Sunday and will decide on our destination there. My car is full for a Sunday day trip.

  34. Sean Clynes (Sexy hairless look) Says:

Need a lift on Sunday/Whenever we go.

  35. Georgi Says:

Please see the trip post with updated details Strat put up. There was a big push to go to Nowra at the Flodge last night so looks like that might be the winner.

Meeting at 7.30am @ the Ledge.

  36. ET Says:

So how are we for cars now? I still think someone (who can) should book the SUSF car, but if that doesn’t happen I’m going to claim one of DD’s seats…

  37. Katie Kate Says:

You may wanna check DD is driving, Eug.. :p
There was mention of scamming a ride with Fiona to avoid driving alone.
Anyhoo, I’m excited!! In terms of people and cars, we have (please confirm everyone)

Fiona(Sunday only): Fiona, Kate, Stratt, Lachlan, DD
Georgi (Sunday + Monday possibly): Georgi, Dino, Aline
Brooke + Mark (Monday only): Brooke and Mark

Everyone else, how you getting there??

  38. Georgi Says:

Also in my car is Arnaud. I don’t think I can fit anyone else in as i have all the gear etc.

  39. Fiona Says:

Katie is spot on for my car.

Eug, DD is grabbing a lift from me.

Georgi I can most likely take some gear as we’re day tripping and shouldn’t have too much stuff to take down — up to you!!

Nowra sounds great, I’m a machine at the wheel even after a long day climbing ;-)

  40. wilfred Says:

looks like ill be driving too if i can get my hands on a car leaving from Eastwood though have to go past uni to get down south anyways. Going down sun, prob staying till monday.

  41. Gavin Law Says:

Hey Wilfred, would I be able to grab a spot in your car?

  42. ET Says:

You’re my hero Wilfred (if you can get the car…)! Can you pick me up from my place (in Eastwood)? My mobile is 0407234280 if you need to contact me.

  43. James H Says:

I’ll also take a spot your car wilfred if you can get it and there is still room?

  44. dave d Says:

I can drive if people wish to stay the night down there but can’t if because they need to drive people back.
Else it would be good to relax in somebody elses car for a change.
And can I be just a little annoying and ask if we can meet earlier – means we get more climbing.

  45. Marco Says:

    Hey there,
I would also join you for a one-day trip if there is space left. Or is monday free for everyone? Sorry, don’t know, just arrived ;-)

However, maybe see ya on sunday,
    Marco

  46. Katie Kate Says:

Earlier?? *sigh* how much earlier, Dave??
Try and contact Wilfred, if you want a lift, Marco – he may be the only one with space left for the trip down. We’re all heading down Sunday, with some people staying over till Monday – I’m not sure who is staying atm, apart from Stratt, Gavin and Matt P…??

  47. James H Says:

I aim to stay for sun and mon if i can get lifts each way and the weather stays dry (looking nice and sunny now!)

  48. Fiona Says:

Don’t kill me but I concur with Dave re leaving earlier (though I suspect he is suggesting this since he can sleep in the car) provided that it doesn’t mess up our coordination with the other cars… how does meeting at 7 sound?

  49. dave d Says:

I was thinking a half hour earlier would be nice, so 7. But thats for the group to decide.
I would how ever like to climb at the Grotto. Its an extensive area and there will be plenty of lower grades for everybody.
And as a side point. Theft was (and probably still is) a major problem in the area. And going on a long weekend probably don’t help. I would suggest that all cars be emptied of valuables eg everything not being carried to the cragg (except the spare tyre). And leave the glove box empty and open (no covers in the boot but boot clearly empty).

  50. wilfred Says:

hey atm looks like ill going down sun and coming back monday. atm james h,et and gavin have asked for lifts so there is one free spot if necessary but its only a small car so will be cramped. Ill try my best to make 7, but it may be 7ish.

  51. Marco Says:

    Ok,
i’ld like to take the free spot.
But as far as i understood it is not clear yet who is going back on sunday and who is not? Because of my arrival just one week before i actually have just my gear with me and not a tent and a sleeping bag..damn :-/

    Marco

  52. Marco Says:

Maybe if someone is going back on sunday and has a free spot just call me and i’ll be happy to join :-)
    Marco (0449126528)

  53. Sean Clynes (Sexy hairless look) Says:

Hmmmm, looks like I might have to skip this one. Does anyone have a spare spot for a day tripper Sunday????

  54. James H Says:

Hey Wilfred if its a small car and we are all bringing overnight gear probably want to keep it to 4. Also can you pick me up from Epping in the morning? If you grab Eug first (I assume you know where he lives) he can direct you to my place). Ta.

  55. dave d Says:

I don’t know if anybody will check this tonight. But I will now be driving as a mate of mine wanted to come. That means theres a spare spot in Fiona’s car now and 2 more in mine.
If you want in msg me 0439 593 093.
Nobody actually replied on whether they thought 7 am was a good idea (but plenty for people read it) so not shore what is happening there. Also my suggestion on going to the grotto. (cars are less likely to be robbed there as it has houses opposite)

  56. Georgi Says:

I’ll be there at 7am. I have 5 x 30m ropes and 1 x60m rope. Who else picked up ropes and gear from dino? Unless the climbers are short we are going to have major problems with 20 people coming on the trip.

  57. Kate Says:

7 am it is, I think. Gavin grabbed a robe, Georgi, and I’d guess Dave and Matt P also have ropes with them. I’m not sure about anyone else…
If we all just meet at the Ledge in the morning, we can sort cars etc out anyway.

  58. James H Says:

Ive got a rope and draws, couldn’t find the guide in the locker so I assume someone has it already and will be bringing it, though with this many people I’m kinda hoping there is more than 1 to go around.

Also its not a beginner trip so people should have organized their own gear…

  59. Gavin Law Says:

I picked up a 60m rope and some draws from Dino

  60. dave d Says:

I have my own rope though I will be climbin with a mete.
Matt P also has a rope though he will be climbin with a mate

  61. Arnaud Says:

    Hi guys,
    I can’t climb on Monday.
Is someone on Fiona’s car that wants to switch to Georgi’s car?
    If u need my number : 0406928901
