TRIP LEADERS:
Kate Randall – 0410027752
Aline Nocon – 0405977116
Since the start of the semester, SURMC has organized several beginner trips and so we have decided that it is time we have a trip that is more catered to the club as a whole. Therefore this trip is welcome to club members of all skill levels and varying familiarity with outdoor climbing.
TRIP PLAN: We are planning on meeting at the ledge at 0730 hours and will drive to Blackheath for pies and possibly half a quiche before heading over to Mt York. Once we arrive there, climbers are welcome and encouraged to explore the crag for themselves (if they are confident in lead climbing and belaying). When the day is finished, we will likely organize some form of dinner depending on how hungry we all are.
EQUIPMENT: Please SIGN OUT the following items from the gear locker if you do not already have them.
Harness
Helmet
Belay Device + Screwgate
Recommended: Chalk bag and Shoes
Additional Information:
We have had a lot of interest from club members about teaching them how to lead. After much discussion we have decided that a single large Learn-To-Lead trip is simply too demanding for us to organize. Therefore we have decided that we will simply teach beginners if there is enough time and people willing to do so on normal trips such as this one.
We do, however, have a list of short list of conditions that we expect from those who wish to learn:
- Have the ability to climb at least grade 17 at the Ledge. This makes it easier and safer for all parties involved as you will be sure to find out.
- Be patient: It requires a lot of one-on-one attention to teach someone how to lead confidently so we might not be able to get to you until halfway through the day.
- Be confident with tying in and all climbing calls involved (Take in, safe, etc etc) – We will have a refresher course on this.
- Register for the trip, but on top of that make a comment below stating you wish to learn how to lead. Also hunt down one of the trip leaders and let them know personally on the next club night.
Who’s already registered?

I’d be interested in learning how to lead confidently. I was confident before I knew how to lead…must have swapped it for knowledge of leading.

Thanks for that Hendo

Hey guys,
Have come back from a trip in Thailand where I did a few days of lead climbing (lead a few 6a’s) so I’m fairly confident with leading on ring anchors. However, I’d love to learn how to set up my own safety.
Also, I’m living out near the Blue Mountains area at the moment for my course (at Nepean hospital) so I can meet you guys over in Blackheath.
Cheers!

reds not driving your car tom?
April 13th, 2010 at 5:48 pm
does anyone have two spare seats?
April 13th, 2010 at 6:26 pm
Depends on how cozy people are willing to get… I assume Emma and Joon will be in my car and that leaves 1.5 seats left (and yes I notice that figure isn’t an integer…).
April 13th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
Looks like a great day, can’t wait. Would love to learn to lead too.
April 14th, 2010 at 9:47 am
Thanks for organizing this trip!! and I would love to learn how to lead!
April 14th, 2010 at 10:36 am
Should be able to come, + should have 3 seats, but I won’t know until Thursday night I’m afraid. Better plan an alternative backup in case I can’t.
Lachy – who still needed a lift? Pickup from the ledge should be managable

April 14th, 2010 at 11:13 pm
will be driving from blacktown/bella vista area. Taking only 2-3 people only. 0405837700 if need a ride.
April 15th, 2010 at 8:36 am
Alex, do you still have a seat left?? Would be great if I could jump on at Chatswood or St.Leonards or whereever it would suit you??? Thanx
April 15th, 2010 at 9:16 am
I temporarily won’t have internet connection at home, so if you want a lift from me (or confirm your getting a lift from me) sms on 0407234280. Depending on where you live, I’ll either pick you up from your place or from Eastwood Station.
April 15th, 2010 at 11:05 am
Hi everyone,
Sadly, Aline and I were unable to get hold of the SUSF van for this Sunday, so we’re lacking a lift!
Alex, can we please get a ride with you? Also, those who are driving please post your mobile numbers somewhere so we can get hold of you. If Ian can drive however, we will grab a ride with him from the Ledge so we don’t have to lug too much gear on the train etc. We’re trying to sort this out ASAP!
Please anyone who hasn’t got their gear organised, get it sorted soon! Thanks! We will bring along racks and ropes, but you need the personal gear listed above!
April 15th, 2010 at 11:27 am
OK, Aline, Tom and I are going with Ian from the Ledge on Sunday morning. This is the car plan as I know (as below) so anyone who doesn’t have a lift please try and organise one!
Ian’s car: Ian, Kate, Aline, Tom (from the Ledge)
Eugene’s car: Eug, Emma, Joon (from Eastwood)
Alex’s car: Alex, Melanie, Shihan, ?? (from North Shore somewhere)
Martin’s car: Martin, ?? (from Blacktown/Bella Vista)
April 15th, 2010 at 2:49 pm
We probably have another driver leaving from the Ledge on Sunday morning, so those who haven’t got a ride, we might have 4+ more spaces available. I’ll confirm tomorrow night once I’ve met the new club member!
April 15th, 2010 at 3:21 pm
Seems like we will need at least that extra car, so anyone else who can drive would be really appreciated.
Also, if you havn’t got the personal gear of harness, helmet, belay device and screwgate you should try to organise borrowing them, or at least post to say you havn’t got them.
April 15th, 2010 at 4:34 pm
i now have to drive to the ledge that morning to return some gear i borrowed so ill definitely be able to give some people a lift but ill be leaving Mt york early so i dont know how that will pan out, maybe count the car spaces without me because i dont want anyone stranded there lol but otherwise some people might want to leave earlier. sorry about that and my number is 0423631849
April 16th, 2010 at 12:37 pm
Right, so everyone who was driving with Alex should now meet at the Ledge by 7-30am. We’ll want to get away as soon as we can.
Again, everyone, please make sure you have all the necessary gear. Several club execs will be at the Ledge today between 4 and 6 ish so if you need gear please turn up around then and grab it!
April 16th, 2010 at 1:16 pm
When do i meet everyone at blackheath?
April 16th, 2010 at 3:08 pm
Around 9:15 would be good Martin
April 16th, 2010 at 4:49 pm
Hey I am staying up in the mountains over the weekend, I have a place in Mt Victoria. So I am going to meet you guys at Mt York. Kate or Aline is it ok if I just text or call you in the morning to find out when you’ll be arriving at Mt York and I’ll just meet you there? If anyone is stuck on lifts, if you get a train to Mt Victoria, I can pick you up from the train station. I have 3 spots available.
April 17th, 2010 at 12:21 pm
Sure Kirsten!
April 17th, 2010 at 12:24 pm
Yes that’s fine Kirsten, we should be at mt York at around 9-30. Just let Aline or I know where you are. Thanks for the offer of lifts but I think we’re ok.
