Intro to Trad Leading
Trips| August 15, 2009 | to | August 16, 2009 |
First things first; there’s only so much that you can learn about trad leading in one day (or two for that matter), but everyone has to start somewhere. This trip is aimed at people who are novice trad leaders or people new to traditional climbing but who are keen to get into leading. There’s no strict requirement on experience, but you probably won’t know that you want to lead trad until you’ve been on at least a few outdoor trips.
The trip will be run over two days; Saturday will be used to cover the general scheme of leading and the important topics of gear placement and anchors, while Sunday will be a chance to consolidate skills and potentially to gain some experience on the sharp end. There will also be an introduction on the Wednesday before the trip at the Ledge (6:30pm). If you are keen but cannot commit to the whole weekend then it would be possible to attend only the Saturday but you will definitely gain the most by attending both days. The location will be in the Blue Mountains, with potential crags including Mt Piddington, Zig Zag or Mt York. For accommodation on the Saturday evening it will be possible to camp but if there is enough interest perhaps we could arrange alternative accommodation.
If you have any questions about the trip or are unsure if it is suitable for you then don’t hesitate to post a message below or ask me in person at the Ledge on Wednesday.
Michael
Update - The trip will be organised as follows; The Saturday will be a teaching day for new and novice trad leaders to introduce the concepts and get some practical experience (mostly from the ground). The Sunday will be a day to gain some experience in trad lead climbing with some supervision from more experienced climbers. I would recommend attending both days if possible, however some people have indicated that they could only make one day. In that case the Saturday would be the better day for new leaders but I’m also happy for people to come along on just the Sunday as well if they’ve done a few leads and want to get some more experience or if you just want to come along and second others.
For those coming on Saturday or both days we will meet at the Ledge at 7:30am and carpool up to the mountains (please indicate below if you have a car). Those coming on Sunday will need to organise lifts so please indicate below if you want to coem on the Sunday only. The most likely crag for both days is Mt Piddington.

The club should have some tents available by then.
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:27 pm
I’m also a maybe for one day… super keen to hit Piddo but it will depend on the workload!!
August 2nd, 2009 at 9:08 pm
There is a shelter that is very enclosed which will keep out all rain and wind and is located at mt york. It will sleep 6 comfortably probably more. So no tents are required. (concrete floor though so bring a comfy mat and it will be realy cold so maybe two sleeping bags)

August 6th, 2009 at 11:53 am
Georgi, I think you get to be known as the Silli Billies…
So far for transport Mark & Brooke (they take up two seats unfortunately despite one registration) will be driving and staying both days, they have a couple of spare spots. Will anyone else be able to drive?
August 6th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
I imagine there will be a kizza crew car going up on Sunday, possibly with one spare space, but I can’t confirm this until next week when I make an exec decision as to whether I can make it!

August 7th, 2009 at 10:00 am
So Mike, do the pictures of an offwidth and a chimney indicate the style of trad lead you will be instructing?
August 7th, 2009 at 10:21 am
Don’t worry James, I’ll only be instructing in the very best style…
August 7th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Does anyone of the “campers” got a spare spot in the tent? I am an approved tent-sharer: no kicking, no snoring, just perfect

August 7th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
I’m going to try and grab some club tents this weekend for general camping use.
August 10th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Would need a lift as usual
August 10th, 2009 at 7:43 pm
The club now has some tents available so if you need one please arrange to borrow one on wednesday or contact gear officer Dean (details elsewhere on the website).
On the issue of gear, everyone will be expected to arrange their own personal gear (harness, shoes, at least 1 60cm sling, 2 screwgate carabiners, belay device). If you need to borrow any of this you can pick it up on Wednesday evening or contact Dean. I will arrange the group gear (racks and ropes). Those coming just on Sunday will need to arrange their own gear (put up a post or contact me if you are unsure).
For transport, it looks like we have Mark/Brooke and Wilfred driving on Saturday morning coming back Sunday evening. With 9 people currently registered for both days this might just be enough (how many seats do the drivers have?). Probably there will be at least one car coming on Sunday morning as well (Georgi/Fiona/Tim… Talk to these people if you want to come on Sunday only). For the people coming for both days is everyone OK with meeting out the front of the Ledge at 7:30am?
I was intending to have an intro at the Ledge this Wednesday but it looks like Dave will be doing the Blue Lake intro this week since next week is the club comp. Nonetheless it’d be good to check in with everyone if possible.
August 10th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Sorry guys, looks like we may need to leave saturday night, as we can no longer stay the Sunday (house-mate did performed emergency departure, so need to find a new one). Can still give someone a lift on Sat., but the car is small, so 2 extras will be squishy but possible.
August 11th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
hey was planning on driving a small little echo that will only fit max 4 with gear although if i can i mite be able to borrow a 8 seater 4 wheel drive although dont hold ur hopes up, let me know if i shud even bother.
