Blue Lake Ice Climbing & Mountaineering
Trips| August 28, 2009 | to | August 31, 2009 |
This trip is designed to teach people the basics of Mountaineering and to give people confidence to camp in the snow. The trip will take place over three days down at Blue Lake in the Snowy Mountains. To come on this trip you must know how to tie into a rope using a figure of eight and know to belay somebody else (who is on a top rope) safely. You do not need prior ice climbing or skiing experience.

The Ice
This is a rough trip plan:
Some time before going run through some skills at the ledge.
Friday - meet in Guthega car park at 8 am boot up and slog off to blue lake arriving late afternoon that day. Pitch camp and depending on amount of light start instruction.
Saturday - self arrest and anchors in morning ice climbing in arvo

Ice Blue Lake Area
Sunday - morning choose more instruction or climbing. Pack camp up and snow shoers leave asap followed by skiers (up to an hour later) arrive back at Guthega at 4 – 5 pm.
It is approx 8km to blue lake though it will take most of Friday to get there and organise camp. You have to transport options to get out; you can either ski or snow shoe out. If you want to ski you must already be a good skier (downhill experience is ok) it would also be a good idea if you talk to me (Dave D) about it first. We will be walking out with packs weighing close to 30kg, so I can guarantee that everybody on ski’s will stack it and then a heavy pack will land on them and grind there faces into the snow.
This trip will hopefully give people the basics and allow them to do an advanced mountaineering course instead of a beginners. Or even join some experienced people on an expedition in NZ.
Stuff that we will try to teach you but will run out of time include:
- Setting up camp in the snow
- Snow caves
- Self arrest
- How to build anchors in snow and ice
- How to rope up for glacier travel
- Crevasse rescue
- Basic ice & snow climbing techniques
Use full websites that will provide helpful info on mountaineering (some are more hardcore than others):
- http://www.ozbc.net/nsw_bluelake.htm (where we are going)
When you sign up please indicate if you have any mountaineering or snow camping experience already.
Also if the forecast is bad we will try to postpone to the next weekend.
Here is an extensive list detailing the equipment you’ll need.
Due to both the amount of gear available in the club and the number of people able to teach I will have to restrict the numbers of people coming too twelve. Anybody how signs up after that number will be put on a waiting list.
One final thing the trip will cost some money in the form of petrol ($30), gear hire ($50), national park entry fees ($20). Those are rough costs.
Update (21/08/09)
The trip will now be run on the 28th and will finish on the 31st
Cars will be arriving on both friday and saturday so you can choose which day you wish too walk out on. Cars will be leaving both sunday and monday. Again pick your cars.
Please say which days you will be staying down for so we can organise tents and things

Can I get you guys to indicate if you have a tent, stove and if you have previous snow camping experience.
June 25th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
I have nothing appropriate :S
June 25th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
Previous snow camping experience – See Main Range, July 2008, for latest exploits. Experience in the Californian Sierras.
Gear;
1 x MSR Fury 2 person tent
1 x MSR stove with no matches :-p
1 x medium MSR fuel bottle
1 x large MSR fuel bottle
June 26th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
I have no gear and no snow camping experience… I do, however, know how to use a set of ice tools
June 26th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
No snow camping experience but I do have a stove and a 3 season 2 man tent that might hold up ok if fully guyed out.
The club has 2 alpine tents, a 2 person and a 3 person to be used on this trip as well.
June 26th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
3 season tents will be fine. If the weather is so bad that a 3 season won’t hold then we probably won’t be going. The club also has a megamid which will work if it uses snow pegs and a ski as the central pole.
)
I have:
1x 4 season 2 man tent that is a little cosey
1x MSR Liquid fuel stove (no matches
I have access too a pocket rocket though you will need to supply own gas.
June 26th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
I really want to come on the Blue Lake trip but will be overseas until the end of August. So, if it gets postponed I would be very interested in being notified.
(jason.gallate@gmail.com)
I have a bunch of back country experience – camping, skiing, and kite-skiing. Got a range of skiing gear and single wall blackdiamond tent, and a pulk (if that is handy?) only a gas stove. But, I have no ice-climbing experience, which I am very keen to get.

By cosey you mean cosey for two midgets don’t you Dave? :-p
June 29th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
I have added to the trip description above. Just the last couple of lines.
July 4th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
Hey I’m not a member but would like to join the club and come on this trip is that possible? I have all the gear, and some mountaineering experience and ski touring. I’m 23 and doing teaching at notradame uni. Thanks.
July 5th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Dave D should be the one answering here, but he won’t be back from Frog Butress until the 10th (maybe) and from there it sounds like he’s heading straight to Nowra so I wouldn’t expect him to reply until after the 12th…
My guess would be though that there shouldn’t be any (major) issues joining this trip after joining SURMC (which is absolutely necessary to join this trip).
July 9th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
Hey Chris. It appears I can reply a little earlier than the prediction.
In regards to joining I think you will need too join the club before coming on the trip for legal reasons.
I’ll email the rest of your answer.
July 10th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
Hi, I really want to get into mountaineering and want to join SURMC. Unfortunately I have no prior experience. I have been hiking/camping quite a bit but nothing to do with climbing or the snow. I would be willing to learn the minimum requirements for this trip within the next month if that’s possible, as this seems like the most beginner oriented type of trip one can expect to find.
DaveD, or anyone else, could you get back to me about my chances of attending this. I’ve been meaning to get down to the ledge for some time but have been preoccupied. Cheers and have a good weekend.
July 13th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
Hey Nick. I don’t think this is the most beginner orientated trip around. You would learn far more with the ASM or with an old experienced mountaineer who’s willing to teach.
To come on this trip you will need basic rock climbing skills (which are listed in the first paragraph), all the required equipment and a reasonable level of fitness.
Other than that I have no problems with you coming. The trips currently advertised should teach you the necessary rock skills.
Hope that answers your question.
July 13th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
Hey DaveD,
Previous mountaineering and snow camping experience:
- camped a few times in the snow and
- been on a couple mountaineering camps in NZ.
Gear:
1 x MSR stove (and matches hopefully)
1 x medium MSR fuel bottle
2 person 4 season tent

Hi Dave
i hail from Melbourne and keen to obtain some mountaineering skills for an expedition that I will be undertaking next year. I have extensive outdoor experience with multi day hikes, back country touring and snow camping. I am not a student of Sydney University nor member of SURMC so can you advise me if I can join SURMC in order to be able to get on the trip. I have all my own snow camping and hiking gear just need to borrow/hire mountaineering gear.

This message is for people who would like to join the club solely to learn mountaineering.
This trip is really designed to build up the mountaineering capacity within the club, and the club is not equipped or qualified to formally teach people. As trip leader I have also had to restrict the number of people coming due to both gear restrictions and the ratio of experienced to inexperienced people. I feel that the spots available would be best given to people who are or are likely to be active members of the club in the future. I hope you understand and apologies for getting your hopes up!
Since your looking at this web site I’m guessing you’re interested in expanding your current skills into mountaineering, there are few alternative ways of doing this. Join NZAC (NZ alpine club) they have a branch in Oz, which is based in Melbourne (very annoying if you ask me since I live in Sydney!)
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aussiemountaineers/
You could go to NZ and do a trip. Check out the web site listed below as the guy who runs it organises for people who want to climb to meet up and just climb at whatever level you can with people of a similar level. It’s free and having been on one of those trips I highly recommend it. The guy who runs it uses the trip to promote his online store so you get to test some gear as well. Current trip is to the Darrens.
http://www.mountainz.co.nz/
You could explore chockstone.org for ways to get into mountaineering. If all else fails learning how to trad climb will teach you the rope skills to progress into mountaineering easier and quicker.
July 20th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Janine, perhaps I can answer your quirey. In principle there is no reason why you can’t join the club and come on the trip. You would need to be a member of Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness ($55 can be done online at http://www.susf.com.au) and the climbing club (nominally $40 for non students but some have paid the student rate of $20 in the past), unfortunately this can’t be done online at the moment. I’m assuming that you won’t be able to visit the sydney uni facilities so this would make joining a bit more difficult. If you are 100% keen on coming on this trip then we could probably arrange for the forms to be done by fax or email.
As for the gear the club will has ice tools, crampons, ropes and snow and ice anchors for use on the trip.
Just a note, any questions about what skills will be covered on the trip will probably need to be answered by Dave D, but he is away backcountry skiing for the rest of this week.
August 6th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
Hey guys
Since this trip is fast approaching. I think we should meet up as a group. Get to see who’s coming and run through some basic skills also answer any questions you guys may have inregards to gear and the trip.
So lets meet at the Ledge next wednesday (the 12th) at 6:30.
If you can’t make it post below.
Also some people have not said if they have access to a tent, stove and if they got prior skills. Can you post that as well please.
Thanks guys see you next wednesday
August 7th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
DD I might not be able to make it too the ledge next Wednesday because the 12th is my brothers birthday. Not sure if we are doing something this weekend or on Wed for it. Will let you know later. I am free any other day.
August 8th, 2009 at 8:22 am
dave remember me
mate I’m not going on ur trip but I’ve lost ur email address. What is it again? Living in nz climbing at the darrans most weekends. Might have to move back to oz latter on the year for work
so stay in touch. Good on you for doing something like this!!!
August 9th, 2009 at 11:32 pm
Gday dave

August 10th, 2009 at 11:27 am
Ummmm I have somehow been bumped off the list despite being the first registree….
August 10th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
That’s funny Fiona. Everyone signed up should reconfirm their planned attendance. I think Tim is not coming and neither is Ben. I can confirm that I plan on attending.
August 10th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
I’ll re-register and see if I bump DD off
August 10th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Lol, I checked the event and there’s no registration limit so one of the admins must have removed you Fiona. Either that or the website doesn’t want you to go.
August 10th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
The website gods have spoken! If anyone is interested the weekend in question is now on the Frog’s 8-14 day forecast on http://www.snowatch.com.au I find he is pretty accurate even this far out. Looks like Friday will be good to hike out but then clouds and wind will move in. Looking at the avalanche risk I would say that it is relatively low for the moment. There is a reasonable gap between our trip and the prior snow fall earlier in the week, and more importantly during that gap the wind drops off. This with a bit of sun should help stabilise the base and avoid anything to nasty.
August 11th, 2009 at 10:27 am
Hey Dave D,
Was good to make it out to Cosmic on Saturday… Hope it wasn’t too cold Sat night in the shed!
Cannot make the 12th…. But still planning on coming on the trip on the 21-23 (though would not be available for next weekend).
Cheers, David L
August 11th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Ben sent you an email.
It appears we have enough tents. Extra stoves would be good as the club ones scare me a little and seem generally unreliable.
The forecast on Snowatch has actually improved since yesterday. Which is nice.
Does anybody have access to snow shovels. The club has two (though when I checked there was only one maybe the other was borrowed). If anybody can find, borrow, steal another couple of shovels that would be awesome.
10 of 12 spots currently filled so we have space for 2 more people. Though 10 is a very nice number I must say.
August 11th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
Dave
i.ve got a shovel and gas stovei’ll be bring. Hav we got enough cars
August 11th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
oops forgot about cars.
I have a car I can fit 1 more person
Fiona has a car can fit 2 more people
I think we should run cars in twos (No roof racks + skis limits space a lot)
So Fiona carries the people and mine carries the gear.
This would mean 5 people could fit in Fiona’s car and 2 in mine. Totalling 7 people instead of 5.
So let us know if you can drive
August 11th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
Hang on so who is already coming in my car if I only have 2 spaces left?
August 11th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
I need a lift down, probably prefer a car leaving earlier to get more sleep. Where abouts do people plan on staying thursday night?
As far as I am aware Mike and I will be sharing his tent (or a club one) and stove. I need to hire snowshoes (unless I get the club ones) and boots. Dave (or others) any ideas about hiring these; where from, which ones to get, how much, when to pick them up etc. Do we have maps of the area?
August 11th, 2009 at 11:34 pm
I am planning on driving down in the Tarago since it has a national parks pass. It also has roof racks for skies and plenty of storage space. I can comfortably take 3 people with me including all their gear. Preferably one other person 25 plus, or close too, so I can share the driving without worrying too much about insurance. I am not sure when I will leave, but hopefully it won’t be too late on Thursday if I can find alternative classes to go to.
August 11th, 2009 at 11:38 pm
Fi – I was assuming seats would be sacrificed to make way for packs, gear, etc. Was I wrong?
We will probably need to carry snow chains for each car. So if you can get them bring them.
Previously there was 3 ways for people to head down.
- On thursday and sleep in the camp ground (hot shower)
- On friday morning leaving at 1am
- On thursday night and sleep on the side of the road or under a bridge
I will hopefully be doing the later
You can hire gear from any shop you choose. There is a hire place open 24hrs open in Cooma which I will use. The guy on the night shift probably won’t know anything about what you are doing. Remember to ask for plastic boots. And refrain from mentioning crampons and climbing in general. Snowshoes – make shore they hinge like the MSR ones.
If you want to hire from somewhere else remember not every shop stocks this gear. So check
August 12th, 2009 at 12:02 am
DD is Andrew still coming?
I won’t be at the Ledge beyond about 5pm tomorrow because of the aforementioned birthday commitments. Happy to pair up with whoever. Plenty of space in my MSR Fury for another.
August 12th, 2009 at 12:45 am
Sorry Dave I got a bit confused there…
Hendo, I can take you if you like, anyone else who wants a space can either tell me tomorrow night or post on here. At this point in time I think my car will sleep on the way down (DD’s third option) but again we can discuss this tomorrow.
I’m getting SUPER excited about this trip, hope the weather pulls through!!!!!
August 12th, 2009 at 11:55 am
Hey Dave is this the ski place you mentioned http://www.rhythm.net.au ? They have back country, skating and touring boots, recommend any in particular? Do you think its worth bothering to book online?
August 13th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
OK guys from last night
there are 11 people coming.
Tim, Brooke, Mark, and Ben are not coming.
Pete S is now coming.
Tent groups are:
Mick & Strat
Pete & Matt
Mike & James
David & Fiona
Chris by himself
Dave L & Sean (is that ok with you guys?)
Chris & Fiona are oraginising food. Dave D is organising for self.
Cars going down include
Chris Camry stationwagon
Pete’s Pajero (I think that word is so funny, Look it up on wiki)
Seans Tarago
People seem pretty keen on getting gear at Rythm in Cooma website above.
The plan for the trip down is leave on thursday before 7 and we shall all meet in Cooma for dinner and hire. Then we shall all drive down to the Berrydale Hilton (Aka under the bridge). The adr is turning off Jindabyne rd onto Middingbank rd (just before entering Berrydale). Follow the road for 1.5km Approx till the road crosses a river and thats the bridge.
August 13th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Do you mean before 7am or 7pm DD? I am thinking that I will be leaving Sydney Uni at about 4pm when I get done with class. Any takers?
August 13th, 2009 at 11:31 pm
I’m pretty sure it’s 7pm Sean.
Just to clarify, everyone should be looking after their own food, Chris and I are looking after food for the two of us only.
I think DD and I will be hitching a ride with Chris since we’re all on the north side, but that’s TBC.
August 14th, 2009 at 12:19 am
If anyone does end up pre booking hire gear from Rhythm from the website the coupon code is
rhy09rent
it gets you a 10% discount. Just did it and its fairly simple.
August 14th, 2009 at 8:46 am
we kind of organised cars as well.
All the southerners in Pete’s car: Pete, Mick, Strat, Matt
Sean’s car: Sean, Mike, James Dave L
Chris’s car: Chris, Fiona, Dave D
August 14th, 2009 at 8:46 am
and its 7pm
August 14th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
I should be ok to leave around then Sean
August 14th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Southern faries!
August 17th, 2009 at 9:46 am
Mike and Dave L will you guys be right to leave uni at about 4 to 4:30pm on Thursday?
August 17th, 2009 at 10:23 am
Hey Guys,
Looking forward to the weekend!!
Sean, Can meet you at the uni at 4:30pm Thursday. Where?? Am over 25 if you need me to share the driving. My mobile is 0428 566 413. Happy to share my tent – though hope you don’t snore!!!
DD, I have a snow shovel I will bring.
Dave L
August 17th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Hey Sean, that should be fine for me.
August 17th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
OK guys looks like we have another person on the trip. Chris Berwick he helped run the 2007 trip which is the one I am modeling this one on.
So Chris if he can go in your tent that would be great. And your car as well it seems.
August 17th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
Guys weather is currently worrying me a little. It has done a complete change and friday now looks dodgy where sunday looks fine now. Strong wind with rain developing later on friday. Saturday and sunday are fine.
My point being we won’t make it to blue lake in those conditions. I think we have two options:
1 we could try anyway if we don’t make it we can camp half way and the last two hrs on saturday just with ice gear (no tents) and go ice climbing and on the sunday hang around camp and just learn alpine climbing techniques.
2 we do the original plan but hike out on saturday and come back on monday arvo instead. So move everything back a day. Is it possible for people to do this one? Can you post below if its just not possible.
Sorry guys, this trip is very weather dependent.
August 18th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Hey Dave, I am ok to push back 1 day. Not sure which weather forecast you are looking at but the one I googled up says Monday rain/snow and colder than Friday.
August 18th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
I will get myself into a bit of hot water with a certain upcoming exam if we push back to Monday, so I most likely won’t be able to come if we need to delay a day
August 18th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
I think I can be resonably flexible if there needs to be a date change.
August 18th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Guys the forecast changed again since I last looked at it monday now looks bad. Which means the current dates are still the best days. The forecast is jumping around a lot guys but I don’t think it will improve much if at all.
Sorry guys its not looking good.
I will check the BOM tomorrow and then we can have a short talk after the comp and decide what everybody wants to do.
So if your available we shall have a short chat tomorrow at the ledge
August 18th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Cannot do the delayed trip for the same reason as Fiona. Frog’s forecast is looking particularly grim and many skiers and boarders, myself included, find his forecasts generally more accurate for the mountains then the BOMs. See you all tomorow for the comp!
August 18th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
Ugggg, when do you think you’ll be able to make a call on it? If it all looks too bad then how is the backup weekend looking?
August 18th, 2009 at 11:14 pm
We will find some time tomorrow and make the call. I’ve emailed Chris Berwick to ask his opinion as he has more experience than me.
The back up weekend forecast looks a lot better. Moderate winds and light rain on saturday morning only which would likely fall as snow at blue lake.
August 19th, 2009 at 11:47 am
Forecast is looking pretty terrible
Next weekend looks better
August 20th, 2009 at 9:46 am
Just so its officially up.
The trip has been postponed a week (unless your dumb).
We have lost two people due to date changes Chris Berwick And Dave L. Don’t worry all is not lost they will try this weekend with me Pete and Other Chris.
Due to people having trouble making next week there is a new arrangement.
Some people will walk out on the friday and stay till sunday.
Some people will walk out on saturday and stay till monday.
Some people will walk out friday and stay till monday.
Cars heading down include
Pete will leave thursday night
Chris will leave friday
Sean will leave friday
For people coming down please list the days you will be there
Dave D friday to monday
Fiona Saturday to monday
Sean Sat to mon
James fri to mon
Thats all I can remember
August 20th, 2009 at 11:46 am
I would like to be there Friday till Monday, but may just be able to do Friday to Sunday.
August 20th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Yeah I would like to be there Fri to Mon, but transport dependent of course. If lifts dont allow the 4 days then Fri to Sunday like Mike since we are sharing gear.
August 23rd, 2009 at 2:02 pm
I can give people lifts down on Friday afternoon. Will be leaving sometime around 3pm to 3:30pm after an information session at Deacons and my equity exam earlier in the morning.
IMPORTANT – I will NOT be driving back up to Sydney on the Monday! I am planning on staying down at the snow to work at Perisher the remainder of the the week until Friday. I know this probably caused some inconviences but it has been my plan to ski all along that week and it is the only time in my calender I have to finish off my contract with Perisher.
I can drive people back to Cooma Monday if needed, and of course can shuttle people down from Guthega.
I think we also need to organise tents and whose in what each night so that we don’t end up either lugging extras out, or worse get there and find we are short.
August 24th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Well guys we did some good ice climbing and all of us survived. Even did some leading on the sunday. The walk in was ice forcing those of us with skis to carry them. It rained on saturday night destroying alot of what cover was left after friday’s down poor. So the ski out after the bridge was snow..bush..snow..bush..dirt..snow..bush (discovered its not to bad skiing on bushes)
So the ice was great and the walking sucked more than ever. Over all a good trip and nothing went wrong till the car key demon arrived.
August 24th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Hi all, I’m going down with Sean on the Friday (I’m also sitting the dreaded equity exam that morning) but need to be back in Sydney on Monday night… is anyone driving down at any other time who might be able to give me a lift back? If only Pete and Chris are driving back up then we might need another car coming back…
Sean, if we go by the tent groups from last time, the only change is that we lose David L so I guess you could pair up with Chris.. Are the below groups ok with everyone?
Mick & Strat
Pete & Matt
Mike & James
David D & Fiona
Chris & Sean
August 25th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
Yeah, it looks like we’ll need another car. At the moment James and I want to go on Thursday evening but don’t have a lift since I think Pete’s car is full? Any chance of you driving your car Dave?
August 25th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
groups look good
I may be able to take my car though I got some problems that will hopefully be sorted tomorrow.
Looking at weather the best time to walk out will be friday morning. It appears we will have to weather a storm on friday night and won’t be able to climb till saturday arvo
Group2 will have to walk out on saturday afternoon or maybe push back to sunday morning. Though they will be walking into an already set up camp site which is nice.
We shall talk tomorrow night.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
Oh and guys heres some pics from our lucky trip last weekend.

August 27th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Hi All,
As discussed last night, Pete and Hendo are driving down on Thursday night with Mick, Strat, Matt P and Mike and walking out Friday; both Sean and Chris are driving down Friday
afternoon, I’ll be riding with Sean, and that group will walk out Saturday, weather permitting. Pete and his passengers are coming back Sunday, Chris and I on Monday and Sean is staying down. Hendo, when are you driving back?
August 27th, 2009 at 11:20 am
If Hendo comes back on the Monday, Chris will not have to take his car. Mike can catch a lift back with Pete. 5 easily fit into Pete’s car.
August 27th, 2009 at 11:39 am

As a last minute update I am planning to drive back to Sydney on Sunday night, due to tuesday being a busy day and I want to get some work done before tuesday. If the weather for walking out is horrendous or there is some other urgent need to wait until monday it is possible, just not prefferable.
Mike, Strat and Myself will be leaving uni tonight at about 6ish if somebody still hasnt got a lift. We will be sleeping tonight at the Berridale Hilton (under the bridge)

Hey!
I didn’t realise people were still using this site as a way of contact. Danny and I were still planning on coming on the trip! I thought we were leaving on Thursday arvo (12th August)? I am coming along to club night tomorrow to meet everyone.
Are you saying that people are still going from 12th-15th or have you changed dates to the following weekend?
Thanks,
Clea
