Barrenjoey Mixed Climbing
Trips| May 31, 2009 |
Everyone meet at the ledge 9am Sun morning. We will decide what to do there and then, probably heading to sydney indoor climbing gym.
Hi everyone. There has been interest expressed in going to Barrenjoey and I have been intending to run this trip for some time, so here it is. Barrenjoey is a mixed climbing area with some fully bolted routes, fully trad routes and some mixed routes (that need a cam or two in a horizontal break etc). Check out the guide.
Everyone is welcome, however this will not be run as a beginner trip so please organize your own gear. If you don’t know what to do about this ask someone who knows, specifically Dean (gear officer), he should be able to set you up. For many the easiest option will be to drive there, however there is a legitimate public transport option for this crag! Take the L90 from Central (or QVB/Wynyard etc) to Palm Beach. It takes about 1hr 40mins, the timetable is here. There will probably be a bunch of people getting the bus, so if you intend to do that it might be a good idea to organize to be on the same one.
Let the lift mongering begin!
IMPORTANT: Please register your interest for the trip using the form below

Just a note Jimbo – Saturday is ACTUALLY the 23rd, not the 22nd
May 18th, 2009 at 8:33 pm
Just a note here that I’m really only available if it’s delayed as I have a party and stuff this weekend. Would love to come otherwise.
May 18th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
I’ll probably be scabbing a lift of Hendo as per usual…
But I’ll try to book a club vehicle for the trip just to see how it’s done and what type of vehicles we can book…
May 18th, 2009 at 11:35 pm
Not 100% I can make it but I’m keen. Will post again later in the week.
May 19th, 2009 at 12:15 am
I need to go to a wedding at 1.45pm that day but am still super keen to go — anyone else interested in getting up to Barrenjoey really early?? How early is negotiable. I’m offering coffee and a ride as incentives…
May 19th, 2009 at 9:53 am
As usually I would need a lift! Any offers?
Fiona, what do you mean by really early? But I guess it will be a time I am still in a coma-state since you have to be back by 1:45!
May 19th, 2009 at 11:41 am
Yeah the weather forecast is rubbish for the remainder of the week so i guess it’s a wait an see. Might end up leaving a lot of the stuff from the women’s trip in my car. Which is 1 x 60m, 5 x 30m, the bolt plates, BD trad rack, extra draws + slings + screw gates.
May 19th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
I’ve pretty much booked the car. All that is needed is someone to go so the SUSF office on Thursday (apparently she’s not in on Wednesday…) to see Bronwen Watson, photocopy their driver’s license and state their position in the club and to pick up the keys.
I won’t be able to this (on Thursday at least) since I have a meeting with my supervisor in Lindfield. So does anyone else what to pick up the keys for the car?
May 19th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
One other thing… I just got an email stating the person booking/driving the car has to be an elected office bearer…
May 20th, 2009 at 11:15 pm
Guys the forecast is pretty poor. Couple of things I noticed the bad weather looks to be located on the coast. It also looks worse on saturday compared to sunday. So the driest spots to be found will be as far west as you can go. Forecast for orange is fine and for katoomba it is a lot better than Syd. Dry crag’s would include Dam cliffs, Celebrity crag, Bardens lookout, Sector 6 at mt york. Maybe New york. Either way stay clear of trad as water seeps into cracks and dries out slowly.
May 21st, 2009 at 10:47 am
Maybes we should find somewhere else to climb then…?? Dunno. Apparently I’m picking up the SUSF car. So I have some space in said car…
May 21st, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Ok, it looks like the weather will be clearing over the weekend but still wet on Saturday.
THIS TRIP IS POSTPONED UNTIL NEXT WEEKEND
Feel free to organize climbing on some ridiculous roof instead.
May 21st, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Ok since this trip is postponed until May 30, I can now offer 3-4 spaces in my car, most likely leaving from the Ledge.
May 21st, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Im liking the big red text
. Fiona must be stoked
May 21st, 2009 at 10:51 pm
shotgun front seat Fiona
May 22nd, 2009 at 12:08 am
I should be able to make it for the 30th. I cannot believe I am actually thanking that it will be raining this weekend and thereby making the rest of you delay until the next weekend :-p
Since the Ledge is a massive detour out of my way, I won’t be offering lifts to anyone this trip, unless you live along my way to Palmy. Tom that does NOT include detouring to Chatswood :-p Sorry.

Having just had a quick skim over the guide linked to above, does anyone else want to do Professor Wigginsworth’s Chunder Bucket purely because it has that name and because you can then set your facebook status as ‘Sean did Professor Wigginsworth and it was great’ LOL
May 22nd, 2009 at 1:34 am
Who me? Stoked? Never!!!
Sean (with hair) I’ll hit up Professor Wigginsworth but I’m setting my status to ‘Fiona Chundered in Professor Wigginsworth’s Bucket’ ahahahaha
May 22nd, 2009 at 9:38 am
Zomg, you guys are hilarious.
I’m keen for anything that involves climbing stuff. Whether it has a ridiculous name or not… I think we should ALL set our status’ to blah blah “Did Professor Wigginsworth and it was HOT” or whatever. :p
So, Eug, better cancel that car booking then…. try and make it for next weekend eh? Fiona, can I grab a ride with you then?
May 22nd, 2009 at 2:32 pm
I’m really keen to do Chunderbucket, I attempted it last time I was there but couldn’t finish.
Me and the professor have unfinished business
May 22nd, 2009 at 3:19 pm
The professor be a harsh mistress indeed.
May 22nd, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Is the professor good looking?
May 25th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Kate and Sean (no hair), you’re in for my car.
Guys is it ok if I bring my brother along on this trip?
May 25th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
I vaguely remember someone saying something about people needing to be part of the club to use club gear/you need to climb with club people for insurance reasons, however I also vaguely remember reading some documentation in one of those rarely touched folders in the club gear locker that said it didn’t matter.
If you remind me when I’m at the ledge I can see if I can find the relevant documentation (it was amongst a big safety report written up circa 2003). Maybe Dave H or Mike knows something about this.
I think its probably ok if he comes.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
I’ll also need a helmet for the trip. Should be ok otherwise.
May 26th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
What time do people think they will be getting to Barrenjoey? Is there a meeting point akin to Blackheath Bakery that people go to?
May 26th, 2009 at 11:26 pm
Typically we meet in the playground at the entrance to the car park… As for the time, if nobody mines I throw 9am up in the air and see if anyone dislikes the ‘early’ morning time…
May 27th, 2009 at 11:57 am
9am is a pretty early time to arrive there, especially if you have to get the bus there. I’d prefer 10 if im getting the bus.
Also the weather is still looking dodgy for the rest of this week. ‘Shower or two’ on Saturday, however ‘mostly fine’ on Sunday.
DOES ANYONE OBJECT TO CHANGING TO SUNDAY?
May 27th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
I don’t mind changing. Both days work for me!
May 27th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Im ok with Sunday
May 27th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
I’m ok sunday as well
May 27th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
I’m good for Sunday
May 28th, 2009 at 8:40 am
Can’t register for this cause the event date has passed, but Mark and I are planning on coming. Will meet you guys there sometime between 9 and 10. would need to pick up 2 helmets at some point, unless we can use two of the ones left in Georgie’s car.
see you guys sunday!
May 28th, 2009 at 11:33 am
Ok I fixed it so people can register again. It seems like everyone has a lift so I think the plan is to meet at the ledge at 8am. There is a good chance the weather will be bad. If its raining when you wake up and you still want to climb we can go to St Peters Indoor climbing gym http://www.indoorclimbing.com.au/
If we get to Barrenjoey and it starts raining we can go to the rock house (which I haven’t been to) http://www.rockhouse.com.au/html/s01_home/home.asp Its not real close but vaguely in that direction…
Alternatively you can just go home
May 28th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Hey guys, I still have 1-2 places in my car for Sunday.
May 29th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Those spots still open Fiona? Would love to catch a ride.
May 30th, 2009 at 3:20 am
Yes one is still available Jesse, but I’m pretty skeptical that we’ll get out on Sunday as it’s raining right now! If we do, by some miracle, get out on Sunday, I’ll have five in my car so apologies in advance for the squish. Boooo I hate rain!!
May 30th, 2009 at 9:33 am
I’ll be driving if anyone wants a lift, currently no one but me in my car.
It looks pretty unlikely we will actually be going though.
May 30th, 2009 at 11:08 am
Hi everyone, since its been raining for a couple of weeks and the BOM says a few showers tmrw, I am predicting wetness.
Its probably wise to cancel this trip but I’m going to leave it open for some last minute discussion. People are starting to get a little narky from too much rain and too little climbing.
The options are
1)Go anyway and hope it dries out a bit and the rain stays away until late arvo. Have the rockhouse/St Peters indoor climbing as backups. However St Peters doesnt open until 9:30
2) Go to a new indoor climbing gym which most of us havent been to, maybe the pitch out west in wetherill park? other ideas?
3) Meet at the ledge and make a decision tmrw. Should we meet a bit later, say 8:30/9 so that when we likely change to gym we wont have to wait so long for it to open?
4) Your idea
5) Cancel completely
Thoughts?
May 30th, 2009 at 11:51 am
I think even if its dry today the rock will be wet tomorrow. My suggestion is to meet at the Ledge at 9, make a final decision then. If it’s a no-go then go to St. Peter’s gym – some ppl want to get their lead passes.
May 30th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
I agree with Georgi.
St Peters opens at 9:30 btw.
May 30th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Hmmmmmm, seems to be getting dodgier by the day. I’m quite busy study wise and am working on a couple of new songs so might skip tomorrow as it is raining heavily as I speak.
Next weekend looks better for me.
May 30th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
St Peters sounds good to me, I’m keen to get my lead pass!
I guess we can add Barrenjoey to the list of Queens Birthday weekend climbing destinations
((((
May 30th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
I has been raining pretty hard here on the coast for most of today as most know. The rock around North Head is absolutely drenched!
I might copt out since its pretty sure that Barrenjoey is out cuz gym climbing doesn’t hold too much interest for me at the moment, and if there are lead passes going it would need to be on ice/mixed to entice me into a gym
May 30th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Ok well running a trip to a gym was certainly not what I had in mind originally, though it looks like its probably what is going to happen.
Everyone who is prepared for a likely gym visit meet at the ledge at 9am Sun morning and we will decide what to do then, probably heading off to St Peters.
May 30th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
Hey Hendo!
Just do the BJ trip a bit later!
) I am up for every climbing related activity
) St. peters sounds good, would love to practice a bit of lead climbing. Cu tomorrow….
May 30th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
I also agree with Georgi. Getting a lead pass sounds cool. See ya all at 9am tomorrow!
May 30th, 2009 at 11:57 pm
I’m going to bail due to rain and illness…
