Once again SURMC will be heading down to Mt Arapiles, Victoria for a week of trad climbing heaven. Take a look at the About the Club page for the spiel about Araps.

As many of the core SURMC’ers will be finished studying and moving onto greener pastures next year (sob!) this could be the last time for all of us to have a blast at Araps together. It would also be great to have HEAPS of Araps virgins take the plunge and come along so we can impart all our Arapiles wisdom.

So submit your damn PHD on time or don’t, but either way get your butt down to Araps. Non PHD’ers don’t have any excuses. :)

The trip will be run during sem2 mid-sem break, 25th Sep – 4 Oct. Organise car lifts in below comments. If you have any questions post them in the comments or talk to one of us regulars (you know who we are).

SIGN UP NOW :) you won’t regret it.

  12. The Ghost of Wolfgang Güllich Says:

    ACHTUNG!

Pikers should expect unpleasant visitation from the underworld.

I have unfinished business with the pharos – Will come if I don’t too much uni to do

  14. tim Says:

in case anyone was deeply interested i’m now def driving back to sydney not orange or some such. minimum 1 (if squishy) space currently, may be more depending on the previously mentioned pikers.

  15. Fiona Says:

  16. Aaron Says:

  17. Andrew Cummings Says:

Hey everybody, im new to the club and this trip sounds awsome. can somebody send me an email to andos_is@hotmail.com as I have a whole bunch of questions about the trip. cheers

  18. Michael L Says:

Andrew, you can email the club committee using the board@surmc.org.au address.

  19. Andrew Cummings Says:

    cool, thanks mate

  20. Sean Co Pty Ltd Says:

Am thinking about driving down on Friday 24th or Saturday 25th. Will have the xtrail so can take up to 3 other people though as Danny will tell you if I have as much stuff in my car as I did for blue lake it will be squishy. Pack light! :-p takers?

Otherwise I will be getting a ride with someone.

  21. Andrew Cummings Says:

does anyone need a climbing partner for the week? I am confident lead climbing although have never climbed trad before but am a quick learner. I would be flying down on the 26th?

  22. Michael L Says:

Hi Andrew, I recommend coming along to club nights at the ledge on Wednesdays to meet some of the people who will be heading down. If you want to learn to lead trad then I’d suggest the best thing to do is to find someone in a similar situation to swap leads with and just start on the very low grades to get used to placing gear.

If you can’t make Wednesdays then there are often some club members around on Monday and Friday afternoons.

  23. Andrew Cummings Says:

ok thanks again mate, i have night classes all week except friday so ill come then.

  24. James H Says:

Anybody want to or planning to drive down on the 26th or soon after?

  25. Michael L Says:

Hey guys, I’m planning on leaving Sydney on Friday the 24th in the afternoon and I’ll have to return on the 1st of October. I’ll be driving and so far I’ve got Jade in my car so there’s space for 2 more.

Super psyched! It’s been far too long since I’ve been down. Hoping to have a crack at sub 10s through the squeeze boulder, the only thing is I fear I might have fattened up a bit since last time…

  26. Sam Doss Says:

Hey Hendo, I may consider taking Qantaskiller down. Though I’m going to keep the risk levels down really low, to minimise anything remotely close to last time. I may start an hour or two before dawn and finish no more than two-three hours after dusk. In that time it will be slow paced drive like a PETA granny. This plan has a 50-40% certainty though.

  27. ET Says:

The question is when do you intend to start driving down? It sounds like Hendo wants to leave on Sunday now for his own reasons, where as the original plan (at least the way I saw it…) was to start on Friday night on the 24th (which is what I still strongly prefer… but can have some flexibility).

  28. Rich Crowder Says:

Hey Guys, Sarah and I are planning on heading down Monday, late morning, the 27th and getting back to Sydney the following Monday. We would love to share a ride if that fits anyone’s schedule.

  29. Aisling Says:

hey guys what’s water availability like at the campsite, how easy is it to refill bottles etc? and how far is the nearest petrol station, is it ever necessary to have a jerry or are small-tanked cars fine getting back and forth from the nearest one? And are guide books for the climbing there easy to get hold of in the sydney outdoor stores? could i ask any more questions lol??
    Cheers for the help guys!

  30. Aisling Says:

Hey all, I’m planning on heading off on Sat 25th AM, have 2 in the car currently (Danny and myself) if anyone else is keen to come with? Will be taking either a Prado or a subaru station wagon, so should be room for one to two more!
No organised time to head back as of yet, but will definitely be back in time to be at uni the following tuesday (5th Oct) and pretty easy going in terms of organising the drive back, depending on requests of those in the car. Let me know if that suits anyone!
    My #’s 0404 116 126.

  31. James H Says:

The Araps guide (Arapiles Selected Climbs) is the best guide I have seen by a long shot. It’s actually interesting to read. It’s available at any good gear store in Aus. There is a water tank at the campsite, a jerry for water is good so you don’t have to walk up and down the hill too often. A jerry for petrol isn’t necessary. Horsham is a big country town roughly 1/2hr drive from Araps.

  32. Sam Doss Says:

Hey Ash, do you mind if I take up that offer? Looks like Eug wants to head down on Friday. Saturday suits me better. I’ll gladly shorten driving shifts and share the fuel budget.

  33. Aisling Says:

    Sweet, of course Sam!

  34. Fiona Says:

Hey guys, unfortunately my ‘C’ is on shaky ground again due to my general laziness on uni work up to now. Sadly I don’t think I’ll make it and if I do it will be a snap decision at the last minute, if airfares are not prohibitive. I want to shut up shop on assignments!!!

  35. Sean Co Pty Ltd Says:

Hey all, i am thinking of doing Friday to Friday. Mike if there is still a spot in your car can I grab it, otherwise if there are others keen for those days then let me know and i will take my car.

Also anyone keen on doing a food share?

  36. Monique Says:

    Oh I’m actually salivating. Gross.
I need to come! However, I’m not at SydUni, and am not yet a member of the club (have been meaning to come to the ledge on a wednesday). Who can I call to talk about my options? (I’ve been to Araps lots before, and am semi-confident leading even though i don’t have my own gear..)
    My number is 0400081291
    Thankyou!
    Monique

  37. ET Says:

I’m going to be leaving on Friday 24 in the evening. I have space for one more, preferably someone who lives close to Eastwood (or Lindfield if you don’t mind waiting around at my place as I pack up…) and preferably someone who can drive and is willing to take a “work shift”…

    @Monique
You’ll need to join the club if you want to climb with someone using club gear. Some of us have our own personal gear, but it’s up to the individuals if they want to climb you. But if you’ve been there lots before, you’ve probably seen lots of randoms rocking up and climbing with people they’ve never met before, which is probably your final option…

  38. Joon K Says:

    have fun y’all. :)

  39. Celine Says:

    Hi,

Just wondering is there a webpage somewhere that has suggestions on what we should bring and/or how to prepare for Araps?

    Cheers,

    Celine

  40. tim f Says:

    Hey Celine,

I dont know exactly what your plans are but my first port of call would be the crew you are driving down with, time/effort/money/car space savings could be significant with things like tents, stoves, esky, big water container, guidebook, stuff to sit on etc by judicious sharing.

other than that, are you thinking about climbing gear or camping gear or both? no list for araps/other car camping climbing trips is around that in know of anymore, maybe an admin could sort one though? could be a useful thing to have floating around.

to avoid a big long list for now, here are some small things that have been forgotten in the past by various people that has led to merriment and misery:

enough warm things (mid/low single digits at night), headtorch, things to eat with/off and drink out of, sleeping mat, sunscreen, helmet, stuff to carry a days water, tunes for the car, heavy old steel hexes to wake up your slumbering climbing partner/s.

in terms of preparation, psych up by having a look at

    http://www.onsight.com.au/news-blog/articles/62/new-mt-arapiles-gallery

ps: how many guides are there floating around? looks like a pretty big crew this year. mucho excitement, hope you all are still there on the 30th!

  41. Celine Says:

    Hey Tim,

Thanks for the reply and heads up on things not to forget. I was thinking mostly in terms of camping gear, although, I should be good for a list of things to bring now after receiving plenty of helpful advice from wonderful SURMC members. =)

  42. The Ghost of Wolfgang Güllich Says:

    ACHTUNG!

All punks prepare to leave the gym.

  43. Dan Says:

@Eugene – Still got space? im looking for a ride, i can meet you at whatever train station and i can drive

@Andrew Cummings – i need a partner. I have limited trad experience and would be interested in climbing some easier stuff, maybe we can meet for a climb in the gym sometime this week?

  44. Dan Says:

@mick I have lost my phone and your number please send me a email daniedwashere@yahoo.com

  45. ET Says:

Hey Dan, someone else has tentatively asked for the last seat in my car however, since she is not 100% sure if she can make it, I’ll give you priority for the seat (you may still want to look for a more comfy car though…)

Meet at the Coles carpark near Epping Station ~7pm on Friday. The mobile number I’ll be using for the trip is 0418326585 (NOT my usual number).

  46. Fiona Says:

    Hey Celine

You may find the ‘what to bring’ list for Frog Buttress useful http://www.surmc.org.au/?m=201007&cat=3

Most big trips require similar stuff, I haven’t looked to see if there is anything Frog specific included or Araps specific excluded, but this should be a good starting point!

  47. Craig Says:

Hey, I know this is not much notice but does anyone have extra space for going up? I don’t mind spelling off some driving and pack light. My number’s 0424966954

  48. Rich Crowder Says:

Craig, if you are ok with leaving monday morning until the next monday then you can hop a ride with sarah and I. 5 climbing days… we have plenty of room at this point.

  49. Dan Says:

Thanks Eugene. I might have a ride with Rich.

  50. ET Says:

No worries Dan. Thanks for letting me know.

  51. Mick Says:

dan i’ll email u now my number is 0417220591

  52. Craig Says:

Rich, that would work out well. Thanks.

  53. Stuart L Says:

I am starting a new job soon and can’t get time off for the trip now :(

Hope you all have an awesome trip (how could you not at araps..)

    Stu

  54. Michael L Says:

For those who are driving down and havn’t been before here is the route I recommend; http://tinyurl.com/2f2dea6

It’s a bit shorter than the standard google maps route, or what your GPS will tell you, but goes on smaller roads. In some ways it’s actually easier to navigate this way as you’re going through smaller towns, which are less confusing. The trick is to always keep in mind the towns you’re heading towards next and follow the signs. Ignore the google maps time estimate as it overestimates the time on country backroads, experience tells that it’s a bit faster.

  55. Sean Co Pty Ltd Says:

    Random woot of excitment!!!!

  56. James H Says:

There is now one last minute space available with me and Eug in his car, we are leaving Friday night.

  57. Michael L Says:

Anyone up for some entertaining(!) last minute reading with a safety focus should check out this thread on chockstone: http://www.chockstone.org/Forum/Forum.asp?Action=DisplayTopic&ForumID=5&MessageID=6804&Replies=51#newpost

  58. The Ghost of Wolfgang Güllich Says:

    ACHTUNG!

‘Where are you going with your horse and bike,
And the townsfolk still at rest?
Where are you going, with your swag and pack,
And the night still in the West?
Your clothes are worn, and your cheques are gone,
But your eyes are free from care?”
“We’re bushmen down for a spree in town,
And we’re bound for the Lord-knows-where,
Old chap—we’re bound for the Lord-knows-where.”

(There are great dark scrubs in the Lord-knows-where,
Where they fight it out alone,
There are wide wide plains in the Lord-knows-where,
Where a man’s soul is his own.
There is healthy work, there is healthy rest,
There is peace from self-torture there,
And the glorious freedom from paltriness!
And they’re bound for the Lord-knows-where.)

  59. Craig Says:

Rich, would I be able to get your phone number or email to plan for leaving? My email’s 7cc44@queensu.ca.
