So we’ve decided to have another Shenanigans Adventure Team Challenge competition! Last semester, teams of SURMC members pitted their wits against each other in an all out battle of brains, guts and glory. Now, the participants from the last shenanigans have a chance at redemption and the newcomers have an opportunity to cement their names in the SURMC history books!
Ok, that’s enough hype, down to the details. After much deliberation we have decided to start the evening off at the Flodge since it is the most ideal space for the first part of the challenges. We’ll be meeting there at 6:00 to split into teams and give everyone a rundown of how the competition will progress. After the indoor challenges are concluded, we will once again be hitting the trenches of victoria park for some outdoor adventure (weather permitting) and slowly make our way to the finish line, most likely at Alisa’s humble abode, for a night of debauchery.
Other things to note: entry for this event will be $10 per person to help pay for supplies. This will also go towards food and alcohol for the evening. There will be beer (and wine for those opposed to beer) provided at the Flodge but the food will be available after the event at Alisa’s house, so I suggest you eat beforehand. There will also be more to drink once we reach our final destination where Alisa will be making one of her famous punch bowls. People are welcome to spend the night on one of her numerous couches if necessary.
First Challenge: For each piece of denim that you wear on the night your team will be awarded 2 extra points! This includes undergarments and accessories. Also, if anyone has any ideas for a team challenge (either indoor or outdoor) you can email them to SthSideoftheSky@gmail.com and the person to come up with the best idea will have their challenge included in the evening and win an extra 15 points for their team, so start pondering!
Prize: The highest scoring team will win an amazing prize!! I am still working out the details so I will be announcing the prize closer to the date of the event. Last semester the prize was a free tour through the Jenolan Caves, and this semester I hope to make it even better, so get your game faces on.
There’s no limit to the amount of participants, but please register below so i can have a head count.

So we made it outside this time but ended up going to Thompson’s Point instead of Hospital Rocks, an area on the opposite side of the river. After a late start and an interesting walk in, we finally made it to the designated climbing spot and a good portion of the group got their first feel of real rock.
After getting a lesson in outdoor belaying and warming up on a grade 14 and 15, the leaders set up a couple 16′s for everyone to try. The start for one of these was completely desperate and most of us had to pull through the first move, but it was pretty straight forward after that.
Overall it was a very good day. The weather was excellent and everyone was able to challenge themselves with the routes. It’ll be great to see the people on this trip develop their outdoor skills on future outings, so keep signing up to club excursions! Also a shout out to John who had a chance to practice some leading and completed the climb with ease. Good job John!
And finally a big thank you to the days leaders, Mat Guenette, Alisa Rabovsky and Emma Welshman, for organizing the trip and helping teach the next generation of SURMC climbers. Great trip everyone!

So to keep things going this semester we\’re running another beginners trip this Saturday to get some of the new members climbing outdoors. This time the trip will be lead by Emma Welshman, Mat Guenette and Myself (Alisa). We\’ll be heading about 2 hours south to an area in Nowra called Hospital Rocks. It\’s a very picturesque spot with some easy routes to help introduce everyone to climbing on real rock. Even if you\’ve just started climbing indoors I encourage you to sign up. As always car pooling would be best so if you can drive please indicate that in the comments section. We\’ll meet outside the Ledge at 7am so we can be there by 9:30. The trip will be capped at 15 beginners to maximize climbing time for everyone and to ensure that the leaders can keep an eye on each person.
Things you will need: helmet, harness, chalk, climbing shoes, 1 screwgate carabiner and a belay device. I will supply the other equipment. If you don\’t have these things you can sign them out from the gear locker on Wednesday night or arrange a time with me to get them before Saturday if you can\’t make it Wednesday. Also don\’t forget to bring lunch and plenty of water and wear warm, comfortable clothing.
If you have any questions my mobile number is 0421710057.

In our continued effort to join the local competition scene SURMC has once again rallied its troops to represent the club at Villawood’s bouldering contest. The competition was held on Saturday evening and participants were given three hours to work on a wide range of problems with each contestant’s top eight problems counting towards their final score. An extra point was also awarded for flashing a problem (completing it on the first attempt). Congratulations to Georgi Knox for finishing first in the women’s open B division and to Michael Lee for placing third in the men’s open B. Great job guys! An honorable mention also goes to Alisa Rabovsky for finishing third in the women’s open B category although we’re fairly certain there weren’t many competitors in that division.
If you’re interested in competing with SURMC, even if you’ve just started climbing, just talk to one of the club executives and they can give you more information on how everything works. It would be great to have more people involved. We’ll be posting an announcement regarding the next competition so keep an eye on the website for updates.

Warning this is the week after the USYD holidays finish.
So Fi and DD can’t make the USYD holiday dates (actually DD couldn’t get leave so dates now inaccurate). And this is a general invite to anybody who wants to tag along. We plan to climb everything that looks hard including Punks in the Gym (though success being optional).
EDITS:
- This is now a long weekend kind of trip
- Probably within 5hrs of Sydney
The usual details for this trip are in order. That being bring a case or else.
Should we have a theme where you can only bring beer from foreign lands not often available in Oz? Such as: Beer Lao, Vallima, Cascade Pale Ale, etc
And we should totally grab a few beers, climb something similar to the bard , have a party on the terrace and celebrate being older than other people. Unless your not in which case you can carry the beer.
Hi guys,
To celebrate the start of semester SURMC will be having a party at the Forest Lodge Hotel this Friday. There’ll be finger food and a few jugs to get things started. When the Flodge closes at midnight we will most likely find somewhere to kick on. Details about the Flodge can be found on their website: www.forestlodgehotel.com.au
We’d especially like to meet the new members of the club. (I promise, only some of them bite!)
See you there!
Emma
Many of you have seen this already, but in case you haven’t I put together a video using footage from trips taken during first semester this year. Here’s a link to the finished product:
Enjoy the show!

Hey everyone.
I was thinking that no one is getting enough climbing done over the break (no matter how much you are doing it is not enough) so I was wondering if anyone is interested in a trip to the Balkans in Baulkum Hills. The climbing there is great and the grades range from the very easy to the very hard so there is plenty there for everyone.
If you haven’t been there before there are buses from central (the M61 or the 600, I will be getting one of these at about 9:30-10) or alternatively there are buses from Paramata station. Reasonable instructions for getting there can be found at: http://www.australianbouldering.com/guides/sydney/balkans/balkans_guide.html
If you do come make sure to bring plenty of food and water and, of course, your shoes and chalk. If you have your own crash pads it would be awesome if you could bring them along too.
Please invite more people to come because the more people who come out the more awesome the trip will be.
Hope to see plenty of people there
Adam
P.S. If it is raining the trip will most likely be off. The BOM says it should be mostly sunny though.

So once again the women of SURMC have successfully evaded the men of the club in order to have a climbing day all to themselves. This semester’s secret location was Hospital Rocks in Nowra. We were concerned about being rained out, but the weather ended up being beautiful in the end.
There were a few girls new to outdoor climbing who got their first taste of real rock but hopefully not their last. Congratulations to Emma Welshman who completed two routes on lead for the first time, despite some touch and go moments. Great job Em!
Aisling Digges took the only lead falls of the day, which I know she won’t mind me mentioning because they helped make an awesome video edit and probably also means that the rest of us need to start leading harder routes. Don’t worry, when this happens I will be waiting in the brush with my camera, ready to capture the moment on film.
After filling the afternoon with climbing, the day was capped off with Anna Rogers sneaking off to a rope swing which quickly landed her in the freezing water. Brrrr. Looks like there was some testosterone among us after all.
A huge thank you to Georgi Knox and Fiona Cunningham for organizing the trip. It was a great location, awesome weather and an overall fantastic outing. I can’t wait for the next women’s trip in semester 2!
