Calling all SURMC ladies! It is time for our semesterly women’s trip where we covertly dodge the men in the club and head off for a climbing day of our own. Past trip leaders Georgi and Fiona have passed the torch and this time the excursion will be lead by Emma and Alisa. We will probably be heading to Narrabeen Slabs but location will be finalized the day before depending on weather. As usual most of the gear will be arranged by the leaders, but make sure you have a harness, shoes, belay device, screwgate carabiner and lunch/water. We need volunteer drivers so we can carpool so please indicate if you can drive in the comments section below. We will meet at the ledge on Saturday morning at 9:00am to maximize climbing time at the crag. At the moment there is no limit on registration but if we get too many people we may have to cap the numbers. This is a great opportunity for any first time outdoor climbers to experience real rock or for the more experience climbers to get a chance at leading since there will be a variety of grades to choose from. Any questions can be answered at this Wednesday’s climbing night or by calling Alisa at 0421710057. Sign up below!

What up climbing Peeps!
So the time for SURMC’s semesterly beer-ouldering has come around once again. This semester, with the explosion of slacklining interest in the club, the suffix -lining has been added to the event (historic).
Beer, pads and slacklines will all be provided so all you need to do is wiggle on down to Queens Park next Sunday for an afternoon of pulling on rock. Public Transport is close at hand, so theres no need for the car, but if anyone can volunteer their wheels to transport shiz to and fro the even that would be pretty Gnarly.
The event will start at Midday (the internationally recognised moment in the day where it stops being sad to start drinking) and kick on well in to the early hours of the afternoon (dependant on how quickly people lose interest).
Prizes may be awarded to the drunkest slackline
Tell your friends!
(Except circus people, no freaks allowed)
Point Perpendicular is back AGAIN. Contingency dates for this semester are 30th September-2nd October, 14th-16th October and 21st-23rd October. Let us know what dates suit you below. The plan will be to drive down to the Point on the Friday evening and come back on the Sunday afternoon/evening. As usual we will need to car pool, so if you can drive and offer lifts please post below. It is possible to come for a fraction of the weekend if you can arrange transport but it would be best to stay at least one night so as to get a decent amount of climbing time (it takes about 2.5 – 3 hours to drive from Sydney Uni).

The Point is mostly a traditional climbing area and the group will need a bigger ratio of experienced to inexperienced climbers than on many trips. However, with that said there is definitely room for keen new climbers to come along and if you ask many of the more experienced club members you will find that a trip to the Point was one of their first few outdoor trips. All participants should arrange to borrow the personal gear they require from the club before the trip, i.e. harness, helmet, slings, screwgate carabiners, belay device, prussik cords etc. More experienced participants should arrange racks and ropes.

Saturday night’s 2nd Shenanigans Adventure Team Challenge made for an entertaining evening. Six teams (Fighting Mongooses, The Jean Pool, Ze Booterz, Hot Mums with Guns, Spandex Monkeys and Sexual Innuendo) battled through 10 challenges which included ultimate speed pictionary, lifesaver leap frog, corn flake blowout, lifejacket relay, humper derby and the classic team limbo. After 2 1/2 hours of these grueling events Hot Mums with Guns finished in first place, outscoring the second place finishers Ze Booterz by just 8 points. The team will be sent on a jetboat ride in Sydney Harbour to celebrate their efforts. Congratulations! Footage of the event can be seen in the compilation video posted below (apologies for the poor quality in some areas).
Alisa would like to extend a big thank you to those who helped organize Shenanigans: Anthony Doig for lending his car and esky, Bec Rich for assisting with supply and alcohol purchases, Chris Knox for helping organize the challenges, and Alex Groothaert, Mike Lee, Elodie Fourmond, John Temple and Joon Kim for helping clean Alisa’s house after the party. Your efforts were invaluable! Now enjoy the show:

It will be run over two days in the Blue Mountains (you’ll probably want to camp out).
Those who participate in the course will be expected to put their new skills to good use by leading or co-leading a trip. (Don’t be intimidated, we will help you!)

So we’ve decided to have another Shenanigans Adventure Team Challenge competition! Last semester, teams of SURMC members pitted their wits against each other in an all out battle of brains, guts and glory. Now, the participants from the last shenanigans have a chance at redemption and the newcomers have an opportunity to cement their names in the SURMC history books!
Ok, that’s enough hype, down to the details. After much deliberation we have decided to start the evening off at the Flodge since it is the most ideal space for the first part of the challenges. We’ll be meeting there at 6:00 to split into teams and give everyone a rundown of how the competition will progress. After the indoor challenges are concluded, we will once again be hitting the trenches of victoria park for some outdoor adventure (weather permitting) and slowly make our way to the finish line, most likely at Alisa’s humble abode, for a night of debauchery.
Other things to note: entry for this event will be $10 per person to help pay for supplies. This will also go towards food and alcohol for the evening. There will be beer (and wine for those opposed to beer) provided at the Flodge but the food will be available after the event at Alisa’s house, so I suggest you eat beforehand. There will also be more to drink once we reach our final destination where Alisa will be making one of her famous punch bowls. People are welcome to spend the night on one of her numerous couches if necessary.
First Challenge: For each piece of denim that you wear on the night your team will be awarded 2 extra points! This includes undergarments and accessories. Also, if anyone has any ideas for a team challenge (either indoor or outdoor) you can email them to SthSideoftheSky@gmail.com and the person to come up with the best idea will have their challenge included in the evening and win an extra 15 points for their team, so start pondering!
Prize: The highest scoring team will win an amazing prize!! I am still working out the details so I will be announcing the prize closer to the date of the event. Last semester the prize was a free tour through the Jenolan Caves, and this semester I hope to make it even better, so get your game faces on.
There’s no limit to the amount of participants, but please register below so i can have a head count.

So we made it outside this time but ended up going to Thompson’s Point instead of Hospital Rocks, an area on the opposite side of the river. After a late start and an interesting walk in, we finally made it to the designated climbing spot and a good portion of the group got their first feel of real rock.
After getting a lesson in outdoor belaying and warming up on a grade 14 and 15, the leaders set up a couple 16′s for everyone to try. The start for one of these was completely desperate and most of us had to pull through the first move, but it was pretty straight forward after that.
Overall it was a very good day. The weather was excellent and everyone was able to challenge themselves with the routes. It’ll be great to see the people on this trip develop their outdoor skills on future outings, so keep signing up to club excursions! Also a shout out to John who had a chance to practice some leading and completed the climb with ease. Good job John!
And finally a big thank you to the days leaders, Mat Guenette, Alisa Rabovsky and Emma Welshman, for organizing the trip and helping teach the next generation of SURMC climbers. Great trip everyone!

So to keep things going this semester we\’re running another beginners trip this Saturday to get some of the new members climbing outdoors. This time the trip will be lead by Emma Welshman, Mat Guenette and Myself (Alisa). We\’ll be heading about 2 hours south to an area in Nowra called Hospital Rocks. It\’s a very picturesque spot with some easy routes to help introduce everyone to climbing on real rock. Even if you\’ve just started climbing indoors I encourage you to sign up. As always car pooling would be best so if you can drive please indicate that in the comments section. We\’ll meet outside the Ledge at 7am so we can be there by 9:30. The trip will be capped at 15 beginners to maximize climbing time for everyone and to ensure that the leaders can keep an eye on each person.
Things you will need: helmet, harness, chalk, climbing shoes, 1 screwgate carabiner and a belay device. I will supply the other equipment. If you don\’t have these things you can sign them out from the gear locker on Wednesday night or arrange a time with me to get them before Saturday if you can\’t make it Wednesday. Also don\’t forget to bring lunch and plenty of water and wear warm, comfortable clothing.
If you have any questions my mobile number is 0421710057.
