Many will know Phil from the Ledge, where sets most of the routes and can often be found giving advice to struggling climbers on how to do a move or problem. The sessions will be aimed primarily at beginner climbers and start with the basic elements of climbing technique, however each session will build on the last and many people who have been climbing for a while could also benefit.

The sessions will be run on Wednesday evenenings at the Ledge during our normal club night and are included in the normal Ledge entry/gear hire costs for SURMC members ($5 entry). Each session will run for 2 hours where the first ~45mins will be used for instruction and demonstration and then everyone will have the chance to to practice the new skills while getting advice and feedback from Phil. The most benefit will be gained from attending all of the sessions, and in particular it is recommended to turn up at the beginning for the instruction and demonstration part of the session, however the sessions will be run informally; so if you can’t make it each week or can’t stay the whole time you are still welcome to come and attend the rest. The times and dates are as follows:

Session 1 – Wednesday 10th of March 6pm – 8pm

Session 2 - Wednesday 17th of March 6pm – 8pm

Session 3 – Wednesday 24th of March 5:30pm – 7:30pm (pushed forward due to club AGM and BBQ)

We are also planning some more advanced coaching/instruction for a bit later in the year.

March 13, 2010

TRIP FULL – accepting standbys (georgiknox[at]gmail.com)

- Georgi

A day trip to the Dam Cliffs (Blue Mountains) is planned for Saturday the 13th of March and this trip will be suited to those with little or no outdoor climbing experience. The area offers a number of climbs suitable for beginners and also has some good sport climbs with grades in the mid teens to low twenties for those looking to do some sport leads. Another great aspect of a trip to the Dam Cliffs is the Dam that the area is named after, which is perfect for a swim on a hot day (so bring your swimmers and towl).

The Details:

Transport to the crag is by car, so please post below if you can offer lifts to anyone.

Meet outside the Ledge at 7:30am or alternatively at Blackheath at 9:10am, where we will regroup and head to the crag.

Beginners will be shown skills such as tying in and belaying safely.

Gear will be provided for top roping, however if you need to borrow a harness please post below so we know how many to bring and if you want to do some leading you should organise to borrow the nescessary gear for this (rope, quickdraws) before the trip.

Personal items to bring include: climbing shoes, harness (if you have one), lunch (can be purchased at Blackheath), water (2L), some warm clothing, sunscreen and swimmers for a swim in the Dam.

The trip organisers for this trip are Georgi and Dean.

Description: This trip is intended to be an introduction into multipitch climbs.
(Plaguerised from the 2002 Blue Mountains guide)
The climbing here is a mixed bag – the older lines require at least the intermediate piece of traditional protection whereas the newer climbs tend to be fully bolted sport climbs. For the time being the crag will qualify as a trad-area and sport climbs will be marked as such.
Equipment: Organise your own (i.e. borrow from the club if you don’t own essential equipment listed below)!
Everyone should have

a harness

a pair of climbing shoes

a belay device

at least 1×60cm sling (preferably also bring a 120cm sling as well)

a helmet

food and water

Each group should have a trad rack and some bolt plates.

Also, someone needs to grab a 60m static so we can rap to the bottom and some of the doubles for the routes that need them.

Note: The cap on the number of participants may increase depending on the number of experienced climbers participating. If you are interested in attending the trip, but the cap has been reached, you can reserve a spot by adding a comment.

A great afternoon of relaxed fun in the (hopefully) sun at the bouldering area in Queens Park. Come along and test yourself on some not too tall boulder problems and then have a few beers before the slacklining commences in earnest. We’ll meet in the northeast corner of Queens Park (see map below) at 1pm to kick things off. The club will supply the beer, bouldering pads and slackline, so just bring your climbing shoes and your sense of balance (and food if you think you’ll get hungry).

To get to Queens park the good options are to drive (or be driven) or catch the train to Bondi junction and walk ~1km from there. There are probably a buch of busses that go close by as well depending on where you’re coming from. I’ve done the train and walk before and its not too bad.

Look forward to seeing everyone there!

Leave for Araps: Thurs 1st after uni/work (It’s a 13 hr drive or 1200kms)
Leave from Araps: sun 11th?
Costs: $2 per night camping fee, Petrol, food, sun cream,
Gear: you need to borrow all climbing gear from the club yourself nobody will bring stuff for you unless you ask them. Bring a helmet
Grades: everything there is a grade 1 there is a grade 32
Skill level: all levels, you must be able to tie in safely and put on a helmet without supper vision, you will also need to organise your own climbing partner (someone who can lead)
This semester the trip will run over the ANZAC day long weekend from the 24th to 26th of April and we will camp at the Honeymoon Bay campsite right near the point.

The plan will be to drive down to the Point either on the Friday evening or Saturday morning and come back on the Monday afternoon/evening. As usual we will need to car pool, so if you can drive and offer lifts please post below. It is possible to come for a fraction of the weekend if you can arrange transport but it would be best to stay at least one night so as to get a decent amount of climbing time (it takes about 3 hours to drive from Sydney Uni).

The Point is mostly a traditional climbing area and the group will need a bigger ratio of experienced to inexperienced climbers than on many trips. However, with that said there is definitely room for keen new climbers to come along and if you ask many of the more experienced club members you will find that a trip to the Point was one of their first few outdoor trips. All participants should arrange to borrow the personal gear they require from the club before the trip, i.e. harness, helmet, slings, screwgate carabiners, belay device, prussik cords etc. More experienced participants should arrange racks and ropes.

If you have any questions please post them below.

A message from UTSOAC about the Remote First Aid course (the dates will be the weekend on the Jan 23-24th of this month)

“We’ve got 5 people from the club interested so far – I’m going to hassle a few more via email now. We’ve got some interest from SUBW as well – but if anyone else from SURMC is keen, please get them to call me.

To confirm your participation in the course, please transfer $275 payable to:
UTS Outdoor Adventure Club
BSB 062010
Acc number – 28006384

More details to come.”

Latest email from WildAid:

“The third day of the course would cost an extra $75 per person incl-GST making the total $350 incl-GST.

Our minimum number stands for this extra day, being ten people.

There is an inherent issue with having a some people finish after two days, and others continue to three – the course loses some coherency as a result, but ultimately it is your decision.

I would suggest though an all-or-nothing approach to this extension.

I will need to know your decision soon as the venue will need to be arranged.

With regard to venue, is Pennant Hills OK? This location gives us access to the back to Lane Cove National Park – it is an excellent site.”

If you’re interested email Marty Middlebrook (marty.middlebrook@gmail.com) and register yourself below

Also, if you have any thoughts about the location or doing the third day, add it to the comments below

Further notice from Marty (editted to repeated or irrelevant information…)
