Self rescue and climbing anchors course

September 11, 2010toSeptember 12, 2010
The club is organising another self rescue and climbing anchors course for second semster. The purpose of the course is to build up the skills base within the club so that as the more experienced members move on there will be others with the ability to step in and help out with running trips and events. Mic Rofe, an experienced guide, will be the teacher and the topics covered will include anchor building, gear placement (as in traditional climbing) and basic self rescue techniques. The course will run for two days over the weekend of the 11th and 12th of September in the Blue Mountains and is all practical and hands on with some breaks for climbing too. Numbers will ideally be 6-7 people but if there is more interest then another course could be organised before too long. If you’re at all interested then I can definitely recommend the course as it’s always a lot of fun besides learning lots of useful skills. Register below to express interest.

Interclub climbing comp – Monday 13/9 6pm

September 13, 2010
6:00 pmto9:00 pm

The annual interclub climbing comp between SURMC, UTS OAC and UNSWOC will be held on Monday 13th of September at the Ledge, starting at 6pm. The comps are a lot of fun and this year we will be defending the Manky Cam trophy so I encourage members of all ability levels to come along so we have a chance to defend the title even though the event is on a Monday. The comp will be run in the same way as our own internal club comp, although Phil usually saves his wackiest ideas for the interclub comp, and the scoring system will reward participation, so we need as many members to come along as possible. Despite the competitive aspect, the emphasis is very much on fun, with novelty and team challenges that give everyone the chance to try something different from a normal evening at the Ledge. A BBQ and snacks will be provided and and there is no entry fee, you just have to pay for Ledge entry as normal.

I look forward to seeing everyone there!

Arapiles Revival Week

September 25, 2010toOctober 4, 2010

n715341183_1318512_1268

Once again SURMC will be heading down to Mt Arapiles, Victoria for a week of trad climbing heaven. Take a look at the About the Club page for the spiel about Araps.

As many of the core SURMC’ers will be finished studying and moving onto greener pastures next year (sob!) this could be the last time for all of us to have a blast at Araps together. It would also be great to have HEAPS of Araps virgins take the plunge and come along so we can impart all our Arapiles wisdom.

So submit your damn PHD on time or don’t, but either way get your butt down to Araps. Non PHD’ers don’t have any excuses. :)

The trip will be run during sem2 mid-sem break, 25th Sep – 4 Oct. Organise car lifts in below comments. If you have any questions post them in the comments or talk to one of us regulars (you know who we are).

SIGN UP NOW :) you won’t regret it.
