Hello fellow climbers. In the midst of all the end of semester madness SURMC will be throwing an end of year party to give you an excuse to stop studying. It will be on Friday, November 4th at 6pm although people are welcome to come earlier than that if they want. The house will be completely rearranged to ensure maximum partying efficiency and as usual people will be allowed to stay over so they don’t have to drive home that night. If enough people are keen we can also have a massive brunch in the morning.
To offset costs it’ll be $15 per person, but that will include all food and beverage for the night. There will be a keg and a punch bowl (not for the faint of heart) and debauchery is certain to abound. Feel free to bring anything over that you think will add to the merriment (pinatas, twister, condoms, etc.) If you have any questions feel free to ask Alisa. Hope to see everyone there!

Calling all SURMC ladies! It is time for our semesterly women’s trip where we covertly dodge the men in the club and head off for a climbing day of our own. Past trip leaders Georgi and Fiona have passed the torch and this time the excursion will be lead by Emma and Alisa. We will probably be heading to Narrabeen Slabs but location will be finalized the day before depending on weather. As usual most of the gear will be arranged by the leaders, but make sure you have a harness, shoes, belay device, screwgate carabiner and lunch/water. We need volunteer drivers so we can carpool so please indicate if you can drive in the comments section below. We will meet at the ledge on Saturday morning at 9:00am to maximize climbing time at the crag. At the moment there is no limit on registration but if we get too many people we may have to cap the numbers. This is a great opportunity for any first time outdoor climbers to experience real rock or for the more experience climbers to get a chance at leading since there will be a variety of grades to choose from. Any questions can be answered at this Wednesday’s climbing night or by calling Alisa at 0421710057. Sign up below!

What up climbing Peeps!
So the time for SURMC’s semesterly beer-ouldering has come around once again. This semester, with the explosion of slacklining interest in the club, the suffix -lining has been added to the event (historic).
Beer, pads and slacklines will all be provided so all you need to do is wiggle on down to Queens Park next Sunday for an afternoon of pulling on rock. Public Transport is close at hand, so theres no need for the car, but if anyone can volunteer their wheels to transport shiz to and fro the even that would be pretty Gnarly.
The event will start at Midday (the internationally recognised moment in the day where it stops being sad to start drinking) and kick on well in to the early hours of the afternoon (dependant on how quickly people lose interest).
Prizes may be awarded to the drunkest slackline
Tell your friends!
(Except circus people, no freaks allowed)
On a sunny Sunday morning, while the Sydneysiders were busy running on the Harbour Bridge, 11 SURMC members went to Medlow Bath for a beautiful day of climbing.
The walk in turned out to be almost as long as the Sydney marathon: we walked, and then got lost. Then walked back. And got lost again. Lucky Dave Kirk was there to find a way to the climbs! He definitely deserves the title of MVP for this trip.
After this good warm up, we set up a bunch of top-rope climbs from grade 14 to 20. Everybody also had a chance to lead, and everybody did a very good job!
A special mention to Alex who successfully led a pretty long, 3 stars climb, and also to Lyndall who experienced her first outdoors climb.
We headed back to Sydney after a quick dinner in Katoomba.
In spite of a late start and some strong wind, it was a really good day of climbing. I hope everybody enjoyed it as much as I did. Thank you guys!
Saturday night’s 2nd Shenanigans Adventure Team Challenge made for an entertaining evening. Six teams (Fighting Mongooses, The Jean Pool, Ze Booterz, Hot Mums with Guns, Spandex Monkeys and Sexual Innuendo) battled through 10 challenges which included ultimate speed pictionary, lifesaver leap frog, corn flake blowout, lifejacket relay, humper derby and the classic team limbo. After 2 1/2 hours of these grueling events Hot Mums with Guns finished in first place, outscoring the second place finishers Ze Booterz by just 8 points. The team will be sent on a jetboat ride in Sydney Harbour to celebrate their efforts. Congratulations! Footage of the event can be seen in the compilation video posted below (apologies for the poor quality in some areas).
Alisa would like to extend a big thank you to those who helped organize Shenanigans: Anthony Doig for lending his car and esky, Bec Rich for assisting with supply and alcohol purchases, Chris Knox for helping organize the challenges, and Alex Groothaert, Mike Lee, Elodie Fourmond, John Temple and Joon Kim for helping clean Alisa’s house after the party. Your efforts were invaluable! Now enjoy the show:

It will be run over two days in the Blue Mountains (you’ll probably want to camp out).
Those who participate in the course will be expected to put their new skills to good use by leading or co-leading a trip. (Don’t be intimidated, we will help you!)
Potential dates for the course are:

The time has come once again for SURMC to compete with UNSW Outdoors Club and UTS Outdoor Adventure Club.
The prize?
The competition will start from 6pm, and all SURMC members of all levels of experience are encouraged to attend. There will be a variety of different problems of varying point value depending on difficulty, so there is something for everyone. As well as the chance to win prizes and glory, the comp is great fun and the novelty problems will challenge and hopefully help improve everyone’s climbing skills.
There will be two prize categories for men and women, Novice, for people who have been climbing for less than 12 months and Open, for everyone else.
Entry fee will be the usual Ledge entry fee.
Hope to see you all there!
Emma

For those who signed up for the advanced training sessions: In both the men’s and women’s groups we had more people register than there is room for, so unfortunately the execs had to make some decisions based on the criteria stated in the sign up. If you do not see your name posted below we are discussing running another set of sessions so there may still be an opportunity to get some training. Also, if you see your name below and you can no longer attend all sessions for whatever reason, please notify Emma, Sam or Alisa as soon as possible so that someone else can take your place.
Men’s Group: Dave Dearnley, David Mulligan, James Henderson, Dean Hillan, Sam Kissajukian, Mike Lee
Women’s Group: Georgi Knox, Jade Kingsley, Ruby Kwong, Alisa Rabovsky, Elodie Fourmond, Katie Phillips
The sessions will start this Tuesday, 30th of September from 7-9 and last 4 consecutive weeks. Heather and Nathan recommend arriving early to warm up so that once the training starts everyone is ready to make the most of the 2 hours. There will also be a possibility to move the final session to the weekend for an outdoor session; this will be discussed within groups and depend on scheduling. If you have any questions you can bring them up with Emma, Alisa or Sam.

This semester SURMC will be running climbing technique training for our more advanced climbers. Training will be given by Heather from the Ledge for the women and Nathan Hoette for the men.
Sessions will be held on Tuesdays from 7pm to 9pm starting the 30th of August (Week 6 of semester) and will continue for four weeks. Heather and Nathan are happy to adapt the lessons to suit the needs of the group.
There are 6 places each, and if there are more people interested than places we will be selecting based on:
1. Willingness and ability to give back to the club, in the form of running trips, attending competitions and generally passing on what you have learned to other club members.
2. Climbing ability. We are anticipating that the men should be climbing at least around 23-24 and the women around 20. While this won’t be the main factor, we want to make sure that everyone will be at a level to benefit from this kind of training.
You can make your case by email, posting below or talking to Emma, Alisa or Sam.
NB. Please do not apply if you will be unable to make all sessions! If you miss more than one session without good cause we may ask you to pay for missed classes.
