How to Join
Cost: $20
You can either join the club at Orientation week (typically the last week of February), or by going to The Ledge Climbing Centre. If you are joining at O-week, find the SURMC stall (it’ll be in the SU Sport section of the Clubs and Societies stalls, and is probably listed as Rockclimbing and Mountaineering). Talk to someone there and they’ll tell you how SU Sport is running things this year. Otherwise, just go to The Ledge, and talk to the person who is working there. Make it clear that you want to join SURMC, as opposed to becoming a member of any of the SU Sport gyms.
If you aren’t an SU Sport member you’ll have to pay the $55 for annual membership to the Sports Union. This fee allows you to join other Syd Uni sporting clubs and is required if you ever want to use the squash courts/pool etc.
Membership is open to anyone, students or non-students.
Benefits of joining
- Joining the club is a great way of meeting people and climbing partners.
- You get to climb for $5 at the Ledge on Wednesday night!
- Once you’ve demonstrated that you can competently use our equipment, you can borrow it free of charge (normally for 2 week periods, but exceptions can be made). Rockclimbing equipment is typically pricey – ropes start at $200 AUD, carabiners at around $10-$15. A full trad rack could set you back $1000 pretty easily. We have single and double ropes, static ropes, sport racks, trad racks, a selection of aid equipment, bouldering pads, harnesses, helmets, crampons, ice axes, a few tents, and guidebooks and instructional books and manuals.
- A club trip is, unless you have friends who can take you climbing outdoors, the cheapest way of climbing outdoors. A day with a professional guide in the Blue Mountains could cost you $175 at least. Guides’ skills, knowledge and experience do justify the fees they charge. Going on a beginners trip with SURMC is different to going climbing with a guide. What both have in common is that they are a way of getting into climbing outdoors.
- You can get professional instruction subsidised by the club. There is an expectation that members whose places on training trips are subsidised will contribute to the life of the club by running climbing trips for less experienced members.
Club Activities
Club Climbing Night
Join us for $5 climbing at the The Ledge on Wednesday nights for club members. Not a member? Don’t worry, you can join up on the night. This is also a good night for finding a climbing partner if you don’t have one. Afterwards we usually head over to the Flodge for $10 steaks and beer.
Club Trips
SURMC runs a number of climbing trips throughout the year suitable for climbers of all experience levels. In March to April a number of top-roping trips are usually run, and are suitable for those who have never climbed outdoors before. During the easter break, the club traditionally heads to Mt Arapiles. Located in Northwest Victoria, Arapiles is a climbers paradise, with fantastic rock and over 2,000 routes, many of them beginner-friendly classics, to experience. Winter brings with it trips to the sub-tropical climes of Frog Buttress (Australia’s crack-climbing paradise), and the chillier weather to be found at Blue Lake in the Victorian Alps. It should be stated that these last few trips may require a bit more experience, and/or a more experienced climber to mentor newer climbers.
Club members will frequently organise trips of their own with friends. Take this as an added incentive to get to know and befriend older club members
